I couldn't agree more! My middle daughter is dead set that her 2 kids, 5 and 7, get their black belts, and it's not an option! They're about 18+ months in. I'll deal with the shooting aspect sooner than later.

Is there actually a law on the books in Texas that makes it a crime to leave after you shoot somebody?
Not sure about here in Michigan, car accidents with over a certain amount of damage or personal injuries you need to stay. Wonder about a

The thing that concerns me, the skell is dead and the police don’t know if the firearm used in the robberies is real or not? That’s very concerning that the authorities might be playing games. In this case, the mugger got an education. He didn't have student loans to pay back. And the tax payers aren't stuck with the tab for his trial or incarceration. Seems like it was his lucky day.

Now no one was murdered in this story, rendered unconscious, most certainly. We all know there is no such thing as not being video monitored while out and about shopping anymore. The owner has this place covered including the parking lot like a blanket.
As far as rendering first aid, this is a busy place during the day, so said thug want to be didn't lay there long before discovered.
In this story the Po-Pos were called and on seen. They determined that something wasn't quite right with the appearance of this young man. One officer recognized this very young knife wielding kid. As it turns out this little pillar of the community has had 8 trips to the Juvenile center starting at 11 years old now 13. (Now just wonder what your life would be like having a son like this to deal with.) Being the good policemen they are, a visit inside the market and a look see at the afternoon recorded video revealed a great deal of information. Everybody on the seen at the time is gonna get questioned and did.
Now imagine yourself back at the being walking into this situation, just having a split second to decide if you should put a stop to this by whatever means. While that sobering thought was going through your mind, suddenly this 40ish year old woman pulls off some Bruce Lee moves and renders this little thug unconscious . Now suddenly adjust yourself to this adrenalin rush you just went through.
For the real kicker, imagine yourself being in the shoes of this 40ish year old women being held at knife point, Having this little thug screaming at you to give it up. Imagine yourself taking a blackjack and working this little chit bird over and leaving and lying unconscious in a parking lot.
Now imagine this is your own son you just dealt with. Man oh man.....

A 40 year old woman is an old lady? There was no murder committed!
It sounds to me like it happened so fast there was no time to intervene and I will have to say it would probably be a bad decision to try and stop some middle aged woman swinging a black jack at least for the average untrained person. she being in an attack mode could very easily think you were backing up the perp on the ground. I think she was wrong to leave the scene, the prudent thing once the threat was down and the scene secured would be to direct someone to call both the police and an ambulance and try to give medical assistance. The last time I took a force on force class it was directed more toward what one should do after an event than actually how to respond to a deadly force encounter.
To answer the above question ... the vast majority of the "I just don't want to get involved" individuals. It is the 'code of the street' in Baltimore :
"I didn't see nothin.". Fear of retaliation or requiring them to actually face the one they saw involved and say so in court.

you only get involved if it will do good. In this case the good was already done. Getting involved was not going to make the outcome any better.

The handgun classes in Tennessee advise to leave the scene "if you feel in danger of retaliation and notify the police that you have done so." It is legal to go to a "safe place." It is considered probable that in any robbery or kidnapping attempt, the perpetrator may have companions close by.
