Can an original(1904) Winchester Model 92 be rechambered to 357Mag? Will the more modern round fit the magazine and feed up to the chamber? This is a good looking rifle in 32/20 with a bad bore.

A couple of the old timers that I grew up around did that in the late 50' and 60's. This was before the cowboy action era and there were not a lot of pistol cartridge lever carbines available. I never shot one. I suppose good or bad would depend on the smith who did the work.
Rim diameter 32-20 .408; 0n .357 .440.

J E S reboring at 35caliber.com comes to mind.
I did get to see and handle 2 1895 30-06's that were rebored out to 35 Whelen. Did not shoot those either.

The rim diameter for feeding and magazining is what I feel the issue is. Maybe I'll bag the conversion and stick with the 32-20 as it will do what I want it's just that I have primers and powders for it but that is it. I will have to buy the dies, cases and bullets and maybe mold.....and start a new adventure in reloading which I swore off of as my reloading room is full...thanks
If there are any other ideas on the modifications I seek, they are certainly welcome.

My grandfather had one that he kept next to his bed. It was an original 1892 that was converted to 357 by a local gunsmith. Back in the sixties there were, believe it or not gunsmiths in Boston. It was a slick little carbine that remained loaded with an empty chamber in case an attempted burglary woke him up. Another one of his firearms that disappeared after he passed.

Many years ago, I believe that Numrich arms offered new 357 barrels and 44 mag barrels for Winchester 92's. The 357 for 25-20, and 32-30, and the 44 barrels for 38-40 and 44-40. It was a fairly common conversion and I saw quite a few come through the gun shop I worked in. I can't remember but I think that even though the 38 and 44-40 had a larger rim diameter than the 44 mag, the bolt face on the 92 still worked fine. I think there were a few issues with people trying to run max loads through the converted guns, especially with the 44 mag chambering. At the same time, Numrich also offered 444 Marlin and 45-70 barrels to convert Remington Rolling Blocks. I think those lasted into the 1980's.

This is a made in 1904 Win 92 and I didn't measure but the mag tube looked to be too small diameter for the larger diameter 357 round. I guess I'll keep it as it is and find components for 32-20 and load for it. Thanks
