As a long time reloader and rifle shooter, I have always been a fan of the 280 Remington cartridge, as well as other forgotten and misunderstood cartridges. I've had and used a M700 Remington Classic I acquired in the 80's when a very cooperative LGS had a 30-06 Classic and a 280 BDL on the rack next to each other. While I went to the bank, the manager swapped the stocks and I went home with a 280 Classic. I acquired one of the few M77 RS versions in 280 and it was the only rifle I have ever dealt with that when I mounted the 6x Leopold with the factory rings, the windage was dead on. I even tried a, then new, m7400 Remington auto loader, but it didn't like my handloads with slow burning powders. I enjoyed a Marlin MR-7 in 280 that would put 10 rounds in a small group as fast as one could shoot it. I traded for one of the first run M70 Featherweights in 280 and the traded it off in less that a week. I acquired a #1A in 280 when they were released a short time ago and last Thanksgiving I secured another M70 featherweight in 280 while they were still available. All are gone except the last 2. Meanwhile Winchester announced they would make the Super grade M70 in 280 and I picked mine up yesterday. All I can say, the guys in Portugal can build a rifle with a figured stock. My 50 year old quest is over. Soon to be 67, I hope I live long enough to enjoy it and the #1 that Bill did not want built. Bob!!

Great cartridge that's very underrated. I much prefer it to the .270 win (which I like too), because of heavier bullet availability. That M70 sounds like a beauty. Congrats and post some pics when you can.

Hi,

Dunno much about the cartridge, but the guys in Portugal have done a very nice job of the shotguns they've built. Waiting to see if they continue the tradition with the rifles. Come on, pictures!

Nice Bob I like it!! I had a Model 700 MTN Rifle in .280 and loved that thing. I don't have it any more but I had a 280 Ackley Improved built on a Model 70 Classic Sporter and love that rifle. Money well spent. You need to post some pictures of this thing!!!

Ruger made quite a few #1Bs in 280 over a long time. My first and still favorite #1 was one of them. It has killed most of my deer DRT, including the 16 pointer on the wall. It has never shot outside of MOA -- AFTER being accurized that is.

My first 280 was a #1 but it was much too pretty to hunt with. After taking antelope with it, I sold it and bought an All Weather Hawkeye in .280. Much as I liked the idea of the #1, the All Weather suits my needs better.

I too am a .280 fan. Like the OP the dealer had a 77 in .280 and a 30-06 side by side for the same price. I chose the .280

I cut this off of another board. I assume factory loads of the same description
