55 here and I guess I'm in pretty good shape considering how much I like to eat. Never had a street bike so earlier this year I bought one. Now that I've tried it, I am considering selling it because other drivers worry me. Maybe that makes me more of a wuss than I want to admit, lol.

When I started this thread I talked about how riding makes the years disappear. There is no time that I feel better than when cruising down the road, even if I am on 3 wheels now instead of 2.

I never had the urge to ride until I was in my early 20's. But newly married my bride was so frightened at the thought of me having a motorcycle that I put it off for the moment. But the years have a way of slipping by, and suddenly it was more than 15 years from that first twinge, and I was 40, and felt that it was now or never. My wife was still against it, but despite that and the 4 kids at home, I bought my first bike. After a couple of chilly days in the house, she asked me to take her for a ride and since then she became my riding buddy, going on 40 years.

Not so long ago I had several friends who rode, and while we didn't get to ride together very often, when we did it was a special time. One passed on, one surrendered to his wife's objections, and one sold his bike after a serious physical setback. So now I am back to riding alone, other than with my wife as passenger. And my wife seems to be getting older as well (imagine that) and some days says her back is just not up to sitting on the passenger seat, and if it's less than 80 degrees she takes a pass. So much of the time now I find I am truly solo, but its still the best of times for me. It still brings back that feeling some days of when I was 24, newly acquainted with horses, saddled up and heading out into the desert of southern New Mexico by myself, just me and the horse.

Some activities can make the years disappear, a magic happens and you travel back in time to a younger you. Just have to let your mind clear and
go with it. For me track days in a decent car, motorcycles at the drag strip, and ice hockey usually do it. Skating, I can feel myself getting younger
just getting dressed in the locker room, everything is sort of a ritual till you step on the ice, it's great. Problem is, sometimes a 35 year old 230 pound, 6 foot three opponent comes along and hammers the good mood right out of you.....welcome back to reality! The next day you remember how old
your body really is.

Vito said he started this thread because riding seems to make the years fade away. Kudos! Finding an activity that allows the mental feelings to put us in a state of mind our bodies say we aren't, is a good thing.
And since this thread has a lot about bike riding,, I'll confess I've ridden motorcycles off & on much of my life. I just don't own any,, and Miss Penny says she doesn't want me to get another one.
Her first marriage was to a guy who had a bunch of bikes, and rode, & was stupid. Plus, their son, got into dirt bike racing. He had a friend who got paralyzed from a wreck in a race. Very young boys & some not even in their teens yet. She saw wrecks, injuries & such that once she divorced the idiot,, she didn't let her son race anymore. He's had a few bikes since, road bikes & isn't stupid or crazy on them.
I was always conservative in my riding,, BECAUSE I saw enough stupid stuff done on motorcycles to scare me into NOT trying them.
I enjoy a good ride,, but Miss Penny is pretty firm about me not owning another bike. I prefer a happy life,, so I doubt I'll ever own another one. Well,,,, maybe one. My brother says I'll get his 1976 KZ900 Kawasaki LTD if he dies. Now that bike is a screamer.

I turned 79 yrs old 10-20-22. And I have done alot of unique exsighting thing to me, in my life. But I never bought a Motorcycle and learned to ride it. I have always really regretted that one truly important decision. I negatively made. I have always thought and worried about. I would have became addicted to the freedom of the open road like I did with flying. And it might of caused me personal problems. I think about this and wonder about just what might have been often. Now that I have gotten so old.

It's good that you both realized that some people have no business on two wheels. That saves a lot of grief all around. Cograts on raising a good one Army brat. '66 or '67 Malibu in the background? I had a '66 SS 396 back in the good ole days. Had a lot of fun with that one.

‘67.
Bought it new in Sept. ‘67 for the princely sum of $2,685 ….. a few days after I totaled our 6 month old Pontiac LeMans 2dr HT.
Kept the blue Malibu 2dr HT (283) until 1973. Sold it for $1,000 with 62,000 on the clock. Best GM car we ever had.
We drive Hondas now.

A Gunner’s Mate Guns. 3 inch 50s, then 5 inch 54s.
Well, a GMG on 3 inch 50's - that really brings back a lot of memories. I was an FTG2 and I hung out in the armory a lot when not working. Got along real with the Gunner's mates. I was on the USS Bainbridge DLG(N) 25 with two 3" and 63 radar systems, and on the USS Ozark with one 5 inch 38. I was amazed how loud it was on the inside of a gun mount! Our 56 radar system was junk so we could never hit our "towed sleeve". We started hitting up close to the tow plane so he dropped the sleeve and told us to fix our equipment. We did alright with a towed sled and a big target! We got the word in '68 that a 5" 54 had blown up, fell over the side, and was lost on one of the DLG's (light cruisers). I think it might have killed someone - I heard they were investigating it and all the 5" 54's were secured until further notice. Oh, by the way I'm going on 77 in a couple of months and staying healthy.
