Just picked up a slightly fired (wonder why?) No. 1H .458 Win Mag. Gun was built in 2001 and other than a couple of wood bruises is in fantastic shape.

If there are other owners out there, how about sharing some reduced loads, cast or jacketed. Looking at Lyman cast bullet manual, it looks like Alliant 2400 at about 30 grs with a 300 gr cast bullet would be a "weenie" load.

I've heard the terms "plinking loads" or "reduced loads" but up until now never "weenie loads!" Ha ha!! Good one! I've used the SR4759 weenie load data in Speer Reloading manual No.12 for their 400gr bullet with 405gr cast bullets with good results in my .458 Win. mag. (Remington 798).

The makers recommend this formula for Trail Boss and reduced loads. Mark the depth your bullet will sit in the case. Fill the case to that line with Trail Boss. Weigh that volume. Start with 70% of that weight and work up. As long as you don't compress it you can't use too much Trail Boss and you will get reduced loads that cost a whole lot less.

I have used IMR SR4759 for some lighter loads with cast bullets.
I have not tried Trail Boss, but have heard some good things about it.

I've used this in quite a few chamberings to create subsonic loads and it works well. The methodology of "fill the case, measure out 70%" takes a touch of getting used to for reloaders so used to exact & specific loads, but it's safe. I haven't used it in 458 WM, that the approach yields subsonic & subsonic with the 458 is a nice plinker round is convenient.

I wondered if that was just for cast or would it work for jacketed bullets. Google found this from IMR. I was wondering if I could use it for 470NE

Interesting question. I've always used it for jacketed, mostly in an FN MiniHecate in 338 LM. With a can on & 28 grains of TrailBoss behind a 276 grain turned copper bullet we're at about 1100 fps. It may be that cast bullets give a few more FPS - less resistance through the barrel?

I used to shoot alot of the rcbs 405 rfgc cast with 25 gains of 2400 and that load shot into an inch at a 100 yards. Its a good close range pig, deer and black bear load too.
