New to board, ran across a NIB Ruger M77 Hawkeye all-weather 6.5CM. Researched caliber and seems like good all-around round. I usually do large calibers for hunting, but after reading CM praises by reviewers figured why not. Got him down to $500 and threw in original 2 boxes of shells he bought, never fired it. I am considering a scope. I started considering Vortex Viper 4-16x and P223 Nikon, I have wanted to try out P223 scope and spot on for a while. I can swap out to one of my ARs that have nicer scopes on them if I don't like it on CM. I am thinking typically 100-400 yards will be most of my hunting requirements. Might want to reach out and touch something longer range sometime. I am thinking now the Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40? They offer reticle in mildot and their bdc, seems their spot on sw works for either. I am leaning old mildot. Want to keep original factory ruger rings so don't want to break over 42. Any advice would be appreciated, I am a huge fan of ruger. I own many and one of my best hunting pups is named Ruger. :)

I have been struggling with purchasing a 6.5 CM for awhile now. I am a Nikon scope fan. I normally would select a 3x9x40 for hunting uses and that should be fine with your 400 yard limit. We both know that your rifle could be effective well past that but, 400 would be my limit also.

Get a pair of 30mm rings and thank me later.
