As far as the bolt stop pin on a Mark III is concerned, there should be no problem in using a punch to help remove it. In fact, the Ruger manual says you can use a "plastic hammer and wooden dowel" if it won't come out manually. I've had to use a drift punch and rubber mallet, with a couple of cleaning patches over the head of the pin, on two or three Marks when it wouldn't pull out. I've never left a scratch on any of them.

I liken this entire discussion to buying a new car and tearing down the engine before taking the first trip, just to make sure it was built to 'specs'. Buy a new pistol, operate the action, if it isn't dirty then shoot it. If it is dirty first try a little brake cleaner sprayed into the action followed by a 'squirt' of CLP. I had a MK I Target that had a gazillion rounds through it before it was ever 'field stripped'. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

New member less than a month with 235 posts here to tell all the old guys how it's done.

I guess I don't see how being "new" or having a low post count equates to an amount of knowledge. Couldn't a nationally recognized and well respected gun person come here, be new and have little post count and still know his stuff? Not saying that's the case here by any means. Just showing that time and post count means nothing at all. If that were to be true, I must be a freaking genius.

" In 30yrs and probably 150 guns, I've never found a good reason to disassemble a new gun before shooting it."
