My family and I just returned from a trip to New Mexico to visit my wife's family. We lived in NM for over 10 years ourselves, and my wife was born and raised there, so it's home to us as well. Stayed with my wife's youngest sister and family, they operate a nice place in Alto, NM (near Ruidoso, if you know where that is) where they rent cabins and have an RV park. They're at about 7000 ft. elevation, so the weather was a welcome relief from the hot and humid Alabama summer. Here's a few pics of our trip I wanted to share with you.

View off the back porch of the main cabin where my sis n law and family live.

The deer came up morning and evening hoping for a handout. They looked pretty poor. This is the area that was hard hit by forest fires this time last year. The fires came right to the highway across from the cabins my family manages. Had they jumped the highway (which they did in places), the place would have burned down.
My wife feeding a old doe. She was pregnant (the doe, not my wife). :)

Daughter-in-law Ashley and grandson Colt feeding one.

The old Lincoln County courthouse is just a few miles down the road (my sis n law and family used to live right in Lincoln). This was the location of the famous Lincoln County War and the last place Billy the Kid was held before he killed two deputies, escaped from the second floor, then was killed by Pat Garrett in Ft. Sumner a few weeks later.

Torreon (tower) where early settlers would fort up to escape and defend against Apache raiding parties. This predates Lincoln to when the settlement was called Las Placitas.

Yours truly standing by graves of Tunstall and McSween, victims of the Lincoln County War.

A couple of interesting letters on display in the old courthouse. Would you pay $15 for a new Single Action Army Colt?

Democrats were causing problems back then, too. :)

This old thing followed me home. My wife's uncle pawned it off on me. I told him I'd do him a favor and take it off his hands, along with the brass, dies, bullets and other stuff that was just cluttering up his place.

It's a Pedersoli/Dixie Gun Works import "Saddle Rifle" caliber .40-65 with vernier long-range sights. We took it out and shot it; I was able to hit the steel gong at 400 yards after I got the range/sight settings figured out. Way cool. I've wanted a Sharps replica for a long time.

A beautiful New Mexico sunset:

and finally, a little sage New Mexico advice

(We brought home about 25 lbs. of the green treasure, btw).

Thanks for letting me share, amigos.

Nice Ken. I love NM - I have travelled through parts of NM many times. I wouldn't mind living there...

Great post and pictures. I love the area/history and all. Much of the Alto area was wiped out in last summers fires, happy they escaped that. Dr.C

Great post.

Interesting how many REAL Westerners liked the .41 Colt, considering how little attention it gets now, and how discounted it used to be among SA collectors, who back in the day considered .41s and .32-20s beneath their consideration.

Seems like it was only good for one thing....killing people dead at gunfight ranges.

Thanks for sharing your great pics. I have read many books over the years concerning William Bonney and the Lincoln County War......... would like to visit there and see it. Beautiful country for sure. One question............. by chance is Billy's grave still present?

Right.......... at one time his tombstone had been robbed. Just curious if you or someone else on here had seen it... Great pics ;)

Great pics! One year ago today my wife and I were in San Antonio on our way to New Mexico, Arizona and then Nevada. We really loved New Mexico and have talked about going back.

I went thru Lincoln on my bike 3 years ago. I was surprised how small the town was. The courthouse is the same as it was when Bily the Kid was held there, and Tunstall's store is still across the street.

As a side note, the original Smokey (the) Bear was burned in the Capitan Mtns. in Lincoln Co. and became the mascot for the Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires slogan.

Lots of neat stuff in NM.

WE WERE MARRIED twelve years ago in New Mexico and go back every year to celebrate and to shoot with our friends at The Shootists Holiday. Just did so last week. Burned up 2830 rounds in 3 1/2 days on the range.

Agree, Don - that is a beautiful area. I like the area just north of Capitan Gap as well. My brother-in-law and I used to do a lot of varmint hunting out by Pine Lodge.

What did you do out there? My wife worked in Carrizozo when we lived in Capitan. It was a rough winter that year and she'd have to ride down the mountain with a couple of friends of mine who were working construction down there a lot of mornings. One of them had one of the early Ford Broncos they drove when there was snow on the roads, which was a lot that year.

I did some track side structure demolitions when UPRR was getting into high speed intermodal and had to widen every right of way obstacle within so many feet of the track. We sold the old crew quarters to some local folks, one a guy built a house out of one of them west side of Capitan, moving that building on the highway from Carrizozo to Capitan, that was a hoot. They were filming a movie with Dana Delany in it while I was there, must have been like 97 or 98. I did a day hike out into the malapais by that big cinder cone just northwest of Carrizozo on the Socorro highway, damn cholla did not let me get far, I got to go out on the big O Ranch and do some prospecting, found some color but never got to go back to there again. I guess several old B western movies were filmed out there over the years. I like White Oaks Cowgirls Social Club, the bartender was a guy, uuhhhh Grady I think was his name. Cool place I watch land prices around there. I should have jumped on a place just outside White Oaks towards Carrizozo that was for sale when I was there.
When I was looking at it I saw three Mohave green rattlers and thought, oooh, surley tenants.......
