As a new member and former lurker, just wanted to say hi. I've got an SR9 and, following JHearne's tutorial, removed my mag disconnect. This was easy, even for someone mechanically-challenged, and my trigger pull feels less gritty and lighter. Thanks for the clearly presented info JHearne and RugerForum.

Hi all...

Please let me know how, or point to a previous thread, how you remove the mag safety. I have lubed and worked the action over and over again trying to smooth out the feel of the trigger pull without result.

Lots of how-to stuff for the SR9

Chuck,
glad you didn't have an problems. My trigger also ended up feeling better after the mag DC removal. I really don't know why or how, but I sure ain't gonna complain. haha

I removed the mag safety on my SR9 and, if it improved the trigger pull at all, the improvement was pretty subtle.

Yeah, some see a difference, some don't, it's not explainable on my part though. If it does, I'd have to say it's minimal.

Well, it really was a two min. job, thanks to all who helped us with this little operation. Don't know if it did anything to smooth out, or lighten trigger pull, but I did notice right away that the mag release button is way nicer. Maybe the spring pressure from the mag DC tab in the slide kept some pressure against the mag. Anyhow, that in and of itself made it worth while. Obviously as well as the ability to fire the chambered round without the DC. Thanks guys!

This is why I decided to leave mine (Mag DC) in place. With the slide locked back the mags fall out pretty easy (no additional pressure) but since I sue mine for CC, I like know that the extra pressure helps hold the mag in. I've been in several classes where people go to draw their weapon and the mag goes flying down range. I'd like to avoid that and the Mag DC seems to help a lot. Then again, if it does drop a mag, I may not have time to get the second one in place.

It's all a trade off I guess.

When I got my SR9 the mag release button was so hard to push I almost couldn't release it at all 1 handed and had to move my grip a lot to get the leverage needed. Took the mag DC out and the release button immediately felt like it should have from the beginning. Recently I put the DC back in since I've been carrying the pistol and just don't want any additional hassles. Now it's back to hard as h3ll to push.

Almost hate to mention this but has anyone thought of nipping a tiny bit off of the spring on the DC to lighten the preload a bit? Installed and functional in the weapon as intended but reasonable release button pressure. What the DC does doesn't bother me as much as how hard it makes the release button. Best of both choices?

Are you guys talking about Full or Empty mags? Full mags will be harder to release than empties. The Mag Spring is compressed fully and the top round is against the slide, putting way more pressure against the mag body than the Mag DC ever would. If it's empties we're talking about I don't think the force the DC exerts is that incredible to give that result. That spring is kinda puny.

I recall someone posting about diasassembling theirs to put some dry lube on the parts and polishing the metal lever inside where it rubs against the plastic "V". IIRC, the poster claimed greater results than just toughing it out with a stubborn release.

I would NOT nip the spring on the Mag DC. It's tiny enough that clipping too much could result in poor operation of the DC. I.E. the DC may not fall when a mag is dropped, not blocking the striker as it's intended to. Depends on the friction between the DC and the pocket it sits in.

Hope this helps,
Josh
