Hello all,

Yes I'm the new guy and yes I do like RUGERS - :D

My name is Todd Davison
I'm a full time knife maker from Lyons, Kansas.

I was lurking around here and thought I would join and show you some of my old work I did on a Ruger.
It be longs to my brother. It was the first of many that I did. I only went half way around the barrel on it.
The rest of them including the rifle, I went all the way around the barrel.
This was all done by hand with a file.
The rifle is a Puma, 38 - 357 stainless

Enjoy the photos and have a great day.

Todd Davison

EDIT to add....
Please do not try this unless you are 100% sure you can do it.
Not 99% but a 100% or you will probably screw up a good gun.

I've been competing in cowboy action shooting matches since '02. I have been around thousands of cowboy guns, many engraved, but I have never seen anything like that. Incredible work there, and a novel idea to boot.

Is it a past time or do you do this commercially?

Hello,

I use to do a lot of cowboy shooting - quick draw.
Got pretty good at it, now days I just don't have the time.
These guns were done years ago, and I have not done any lately.
I had the rifle apart about a year and a half, moved twice.....
Back together and it works fine, an NO I'm not a gun smith.
Just a knife maker...... :D

Thanks for the compliment, very much appreciated.

Todd,

Not to rain or your parade. But I find some very serious fault with both the guns.

In a nutshell, the problem is that I don't own them :) ..Excellent work, wish I could see them in person. In many ways, I prefer that to custom engraving.

So, old buddy, old pal of mine :? Do you do this work for others?

Wow! That file work looks great. I have a friend that is a knifemaker and does file work, but I don't think he has ever thought of doing file work on a gun. If you don't mind I am going to forward these pics to him.

BTW his website is http://www.dushaneknives.com

That is simply amazing. I can't believe that you did it with a file!

Wonderful.

You'll win a lot of "bet you don't have one of these" contests.

Do I do this for other people?

Maybe? If the price was right?

The barrel is not really that ruff, it is smoother than what you would think it is.
As far as putting any wear on a holster that is.
Because after filing you have to rape fine sand paper around the file and polish it all out.

I took a look at Dushane's knives - They are really nice.
He does some great file work.

I was at the Spirit of Steel Knife Show in Texas a few years ago.
And Bill Ruple looked at this rifle he could not believe it, he was very impressed to say he least.

I really do appreciate the compliments very much.
It takes a LOT of time and skill to do this type of work.

Take care.

I love it. Beautiful work. The thing is, you knew when to stop. I'll quote from Skalkaho Slim "Flashy, without being "flashy""

That kind of thing could be over done. Your work isn't.

When I said you knew when to stop I meant it. Below is a pic where someone did not know when to stop. To me it looks like some kind of lazer gun. Your work remains tasteful and compliments the guns nicely. My eyes just don't know where to focus on the picture below.

Flashy, without being "flashy". ;)
