I would like to know if the 10/22 I just picked up is a pieced together or the real deal. The barrel reads "Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. Southport, Conn. U.S.A. The receiver says "RUGER® Model 10/22 Carbine (emblem) ® .22 L.R. caliber". The stock has checkering and swivels. The butt plate is plastic with the Ruger emblem. I would post pics if I knew how to attach them.

My next question about hand checkering.....how do you tell, when was it used, which model(s).......

Any and all help, comments are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like Ruger's "Sporter" model. Here's a pic of the version they currently offer from Ruger's website:

Looks like your gun was made sometime in 1973 or so. The only major difference between your gun and the same model that Ruger makes today is that Ruger changed the buttplate from the plastic style to a black pad in 1987. And of course, the barrel rollmark was changed from what you see there to the Warning rollmark in late 1977/early 1978.
Ruger's eagle logo trademark disappeared from the side of the receiver in 2005.
