I decided that the idea of getting a new .22 to replace the one from so long ago would be a good idea. I asked around on a couple forums for advice and was directed toward a ruger 10/22. I looked and found one at a local pawn shop for $125. I feel like I got a pretty good deal and look forward to shooting it. I don't know anything about it so anything that you all feel I should know would be appreciated. Also any idea where I can find more mags and preferably higher capacity as well with reliability and quality being most important. Thanks!

Looks like an old-school, walnut-stocked, metal-buttplate 10/22. Congrats! That's a GREAT rifle, much better than the ones being made today and worth almost twice what you paid for it.

Don't do anything to that one that can't be undone.

For hi-cap mags that won't break the bank, Butler Creek Steel Lips, ask for them by name. Accept no substitutes! (Such as Butler Creek's own Hot Lips, an inferior design.)

The scope is a bushnell sportview or that's what it says on the side of the scope anyway. Again I am a self admitted newbie so i don't know what this means for accuracy of the gun but it is what it is.

Yes,, that was a great deal. I immediately spotted the walnut & metal buttplate. Definately an older one & in great shape. You did VERY well.

I looked up the serial number to determine the year and it appears to be a 71 model. Thanks to everyone for their words of wisdom. Now just to find a place to get ammo!

I might've ripped the pocket off my pants in my effort to get my wallet out in order to buy that 10/22 for $125.00. Excellent deal. I'd stick with the factory mags, and just carry one or two extras in my pocket. My tactical solutions 25 rd magazine doesn't seem to fit my older gun very well, but it goes right into the newer stainless one I bought.

Those rings are 'high', but I think they should be just fine for the application -- this isn't a heavy-barreled target rifle, so sight-to-bore isn't critical. I must admit, I'm a bit jealous. I keep enough in my wallet to snatch up a deal like that if I find it, and the cobwebs are growing on top of cobwebs.
