O.K. I bought a Hy Hunter .357 Magnum Single Action. I found this in a pawn shop maybe eight or ten years ago. The gunI bought was pristine condition, stock plain old Hy Hunter. This:

I shot the gun and it was O.K. but no whamdinger. And, it had parts of ZAMAK and plastic grips. So, it became a project gun. I bought a brass trigger guard for a Hawes (successors to Hy Hunter) and fit it to the gun:

Looking for a brass backstrap, I found one for a Uberti Single Action, actually an 1851 Navy backstrap. This fit the gun but required a modicum of fitting to the trigger guard:

This work cried out for walnut grips. Having some scrap walnut on hand, I made a one piece style (two grips with a glued spacer between) grip:

Well, turned out nice, I thought. So I posted the photo on another forum and some collector there desired my gun. He now has it in his collection.

I love seeing this. Sometimes I feel guilty for changing grip frames and such on my Ruger's. But I'm never selling, and once I die it doesn't matter - so I forge ahead. Sort of like my Jeeps and my old hot rod shop- I love unique and ingenious.

Any Single Action revolver with aluminum grip frames deserved to have it changed out. All of mine are blue steel. All that are not brass, that is.

I appreciate that. Those look fantastic and I would love to be able to use steel. I have neck/shoulder issues and huge hands- so I'm a big fan of RWGripframes aluminum offerings. I've fit several Super Hunter stainless gripframes also, that's about the smallest gripframe I'm comfortable with. I absolutely love the look of brass but the weight is an issue for me. I've actually considered looking for a brass coating for the aluminum frames- PVD, Cerakote, or maybe anodizing. My latest gripframe transplant needs to be either black or brass…That was going to be one of this afternoon's search projects. Right after mowing the acreage and trimming the fringes…

Nice!!!

I shot SASS with Uberti's for a while and I had a Mitchells Arms 45 Colt, as well as Pietta 357 and a Sig 367. Some of those clones were pretty durable.

I agree with you so much on this. I had a steel grip frame and steel ejector rod put on a Single Six and it makes that gun so much nicer than a Single Six with the alloy grip frame.

You did a great job on the HY Hunter revolver.
