Just a little while ago,, Miss Penny & I were relaxing, getting ready to watch the local news on TV. We expected the usual 4th of July stuff, (fireworks stories, burned houses, people injured etc.)
But the opening story,, made our hearts stop.
Last night, we saw on the news a late breaking story about "something" happening, on I-26 in Buncombe County.

The opening story was about a NC Highway patrol officer, who had been shot.

He is a LONG time friend of ours. He quit a good paying job, taking a reduction in pay to follow his dream of being a NCHP officer. Thirteen years ago, he achieved this goal.
He has been a longtime shooter at my range in USPSA, helped us with our Autism Charity matches (volunteer AND $$ donations,) one of our Women On Target instructors, just to name a few things that made Trooper Jeff Dunlap a treasured friend.

When the news story showed his picture & gave his name, Miss Penny & I both jumped, and our hearts stopped. We just knew we'd just lost a good person.

Then,, the story continued.
Apparently Jeff had stopped to assist a motorist who'd broken down. Apparently the motorist suddenly pulled a gun & shot Jeff in the chest.
Jeff was able to return fire & kill the suspect.

His Vest protected his life. And apparently good enough that they didn't mention him being hospitalized. Apparently he may not be in the hospital.

After the shock wore off,,, and we calmed down a bit. I texted Jeff to let him know we'd just heard, and that our prayers were with him.

He replied to me, thanking us.

My heart can work again. I texted my LEO son, to let him know I had been in touch with Jeff.

And tonight, a sweet young boy still has his father. Jeff is a single Dad.

Thanks be to God!

Folks,, we have a little update on this event.
It was announced yesterday,, that Officer Jeff Dunlap has been cleared by the DA, and should be cleared by the SBI shortly.

Now,, if you want to see a picture of the guy just before he shot Jeff,, on www.wlos.com under local news,, they have a short story, as well as a picture from Trooper Dunlap's dash camera. It shows the suspect, with a .44 magnum, pointed directly at Jeff, from just a few feet away, and you can see Jeff is in the process of drawing his gun.
Point blank, with a .44 magnum, and his vest saved his life, AND allowed him to return fire.
No motive has been discovered,, and if we had to GUESS,,,,, it had to be a set-up ambush type of thing. IF,, IF,,, that was the motive,, it failed in it's plan.

From all of us who know Jeff,, and his family,, MANY thanks for the well wishes & prayers.

Glad that story had a happy ending......

I'd suggest to him that, maybe God's telling him to go back to his old job...!!! That would be too "close" for me to handle..!

Many thanks to all the kind words & thoughts.

This one hits very close to home,, and cost me some sleep last night.

Luckily, Jeff survived. He's on administrative leave until the State wraps up their investigation. I'm sure he's also trying to get over the physical & mental assault he sustained.

With family & so many friends in law enforcement, I pray for them as I do for our soldiers daily. And each & every time I see any LEO that I can talk to, I thank them for their service,, and leave them with a simple request; "Go home safely every day."

Now I know some folks here hate cops. Some distrust cops. And I can say without a doubt,, there are some LEO's that should not be cops, or carry a gun. I've known my share of "bad" cops myself. But it's the same in every profession or family. We all know people who are not suited to serve the public, or heck, even a hamburger in a fast food place.
But for the most part,, the majority of LEO's ESPECIALLY the more rural guys,, are good people trying to do a thankless job, with less than good pay. And to be a target for someone just because of their uniform, or their job is wrong.
When I see cops attacked or whatever,, I'm reminded of the soldiers returning home from Vietnam, when they were verbally abused (and sometimes physically attacked) by anti-war protesters. Soldiers were following orders. LEO's follow orders & the laws. NONE are perfect,, but if you want changes, then work to make the changes, don't attack the actual officers or soldiers.

So today,, I can thank the Lord for saving a friend,, AND a great officer of the NCHP!

So glad it wasnt the end result I was expecting when I first started reading. Glad he wasn't hit bad and more so that he removed another worthless skel from society.

Tyrone I have known 2 cops who were total badge heavy piles of manure that could walk and talk and antagonize people. However both got jammed up after messing with the wrong people and their law enforcement careers were terminated. The 1% or less end up giving the majority a bad name. God bless your friend Jeff and your son for doing the jobs that they do. Let me know if Jeff wants something like your son has. It would be an honor to hook him up

Why did the guy with the broken down car have to go and shoot the highway patrol officer anyway?

Did they figure out a motive yet? What a dirt bag for doing such a thing. People are too mean to each other.

And I'm very glad your friend is all right physically.

Tyrone, my son is a California Highway Patrol officer. These reports give us dads pause. Training, training, training - it pays off. Perp didn't get a second shot off. Glad to hear he's OK. Hopefully, the N.C. patrol will provide all the support he'll need.

Kevin,,, the news media hasn't given a direct motive. Just a few comments from folks who knew the suspect, saying he'd been upset lately. It'll be a bit before anybody I know will be able to give me real details.

Thanks for the offer Carl.

Terry,,, I seem to recall you telling me long ago about your son. Any reports of a LEO shot cause the Dad in us to pause, or worry a bit more. Even worse when it's one you know. And you are correct,, training, training training. But I like to think part of Jeff's "training began long before he became a NCHP officer. When he spent a lot of time in USPSA competition to where he learned to react quickly, and shoot straight.
And yes,, the NCHP does have a pretty good support system for their officers.

I suspect the "broken down car" was a ruse to sucker in a law enforcement officer. This was a pre-meditated act. I frequently see the local LE officers aiding travelers whose conveyance has broken down, sometimes just by stopping behind the broken down conveyance and turning on their blue lights. In NC the law requires traffic to move over (if possible) to the inside lane if LE has a vehicle stopped on the side of the highway.

I read today it was adjudicated a good shooting. Judging from picture on Fox….looks textbook. Any guess on what the bad guy was shooting? I can't tell from picture… point blank by anything that close is going to hurt
