When I was a kid I tried to get my dad to buy a power lawn mower. He thumped my chest and said "I got one".
He finally bought one when I left home. Then years later he bought a riding mower. That got to be his "entertainment" and he didn't want me to ride it.

I recall asking my mom how the Indians mowed there lawn when I was a kid. She said they used clam shells and snapped the grass off short with them.

Well I have one of the larger yards in my "hood" and due to a bad back and two bad knees plus old age, the yard didn't get done very often. Guys kept coming around and wanting $200 to $300 to do the yard and that was their monthly fee. Note that they didn't get the job. One day this Native American of the reservation came by and offered to do the yard. I let him check it out and he said $65 to clear all the stuff out and $65 a month to keep it neat. I figured I'd let him try and by golly he did the whole yard in two days. Comes by around the first of the month and keeps things neat and tidy.It still takes better that three and a half to four hours to do the job, front and back yards. I know my lot is about the largest one on the block. Dunno how that worked out but it is what it is.

Needed to do oil & filter change to get ready for first mow. Called ahead and got "takeout" at the local JD dealer for supplies, gave 'em card info. At the store, there were several boxes sitting out front with names on them. Found mine, checked contents and included paperwork. Put box in bed of truck, sanitized hands, drove home. Offloaded box in the barn, put contents on the shelf, kicked the box under the yard cart, sanitized hands again, called it a day. Saw no one, talked to nobody. Not bad.

Mowed my first for hire yard, when I was 9 years old. Uncle Jim paid me $2.50 each time in 1959. He had a self propelled push mower, but it went to fast for me to control, so I pushed it until I learned to control it. Now I mow the wife's cousins country yard, his mower/fuel, charge $75.00 each time. He lives in Florida, property is in Kansas. Yesterday was first this season, 3 hours included travel time.
