So I rented a decent residential neighborhood house. Good sized lawn to mow. I called around to see about hiring someone to mow it, well the cheapest price I was quoted was $65 each mowing, my property management I rent from said they want around $75-80 each mowing here in Oklahoma if we get rain like last year, it will need it minimum 2x/mo. I was told, "oh your yard is so large" I got news for them, this isn't a large yard. And of course back in the day I mowed way bigger than this once a week for $5 or less most of the time.
I called about renting a mower, $125/day, holy crap folks, its just a mower, I can rent a car for $20/day
So now at age 67, I find that, indeed I am clueless about what crap cost to get anything done, and just how picky they want to be if you hire them. One guy told me, "Well if you want it weed eated too that would be an additional $25 each time and we don't haul off your lawn clippings or edge sidewalks or driveways.
Ok so I guess I will probably end up buying another mower, I said after I sold the last one I was never going to buy another one since at that time I was living in Colorado and our yard was rocks and cactus. I asked the teenaged boy across the stree, he is about 15, if he wanted to make $20, he said he would have to ask his mom, she told me, she didn't think a 15yr old was old enough to be mowing other people's yards. I told her, Oh ok, hard for me to understand since at age 13 I was working as an oilfield roustabout and at age 15 I was running everything on the farm as well as driving loads of wheat to the grain elevator in a 2 ton dump bed grain truck.
This is the part of getting older I hate the most, seeing what a bunch of whiney little wuss everyone and everything has to be too hard to get done now.
I just checked, the fine for not mowing your lawn is $50 and you have to pay the city to mow it. So if I let it go all summer I could probably pay the fine, get them to mow it, pay the bill for that and probably save money over trying to do it the right way. That is messed up

21 inch self propelled Troy Bilt high wheel push mower $269 at Lowes.

Leave the bag off. The clippings are good for the soil.

Wow! When you say it's a big yard or not so big, how large is it? Our house is on a normal sized city lot, I think it's around 12,000 sq feet. We pay our lawn guy $35 per mowing. This is in DFW as well, where I've come to realize everything costs more.

And they want $25 more for weed eating? It sounds like they are taking advantage of you. Is this a small town? I'd think the prices should be better.

I'd look and find out if any of the neighbors are having a company cut
theirs and then contact that company. It might be a bit cheaper if
they could get two or three lawns without reloading and moving their equipment.

I was gonna do my first cut of the year on my 2 acres yesterday while the weather was nice. Got about 50 feet and the deck belt snapped. Sat there and fumed for a few minutes then drove back and parked it. Fumed some more and ordered a new belt. Might be here in a week or so, and the grass and weeds will probably be about 2 feet tall by then, and I'll fume some more. :x

A 15 year old can't cut grass? Time to start learning a work ethic instead of being given everything. At that age I would have loved to make an extra $40 a month. Of course with inflation that $20 then would be $136 now. Maybe that price the lawn guys were quoting wasn't a bad deal.

I hate to mow my yard and feel it's a waste of time, fuel, and pasture. Still mow because of spousal demands and run the string trimmer when I feel like it. This year will be even worse than the previous few. I had to excavate a sewer line and we're getting a new fiber optic telephone line this summer. The water district dug up a corner of the yard to replace the meter and 10' of supply line last year so that's still a rough swampy spot. I'll keep the old JD rider going another year and trim what I can.
Maybe my distaste for mowing stems from my first business endeavor--mowing cemeteries.

That 15 yr kid probably can't get free of computer, or a game. I was mowing by age 10. I do my trimming and weedeater. But, mower is a John Deere. I'm thru pushing one. Sad when kids don't want to work.

This is just my opinion, but the OP wants to pay the 15 year old $20 bucks for a job he got a quote of $65 to $80. I'd say the kid isn't lazy at all. I'm still curious about how big the yard is?

You can't call someone lazy when they are just not wanting to work ALL day for twenty bucks. How many hours would it take the 15 year old? More than 1 1/2 hours and it isn't enough money. Again, just my opinion....

Seriously, it's sad that the 20 dollar bill is the new 5.
Chock it up to "progress".

Kid said he'd ask his mom, not that he didn't want to work...

Hi,

How many hours does it take to make $75-$80? How many hours does it take to mow? One way or another I've got my time involved.

I ask myself a variant of that question concerning a lot of things around the house. I don't end up paying somebody else too often unless it's something big, like a large dead tree that's gotta come out thru electric and other lines without crashing the neighbor's fence or cars. Recipe for disaster to do it myself. I'm still working on the $1000 that one's gonna cost... ;)

As long as I can get my lawn mowed for the same or less money than the chiropractor charges to fix my back after I mow it, I'll keep hiring a yard man.
