So I rented a decent residential neighborhood house. Good sized lawn to mow. I called around to see about hiring someone to mow it, well the cheapest price I was quoted was $65 each mowing, my property management I rent from said they want around $75-80 each mowing here in Oklahoma if we get rain like last year, it will need it minimum 2x/mo. I was told, "oh your yard is so large" I got news for them, this isn't a large yard. And of course back in the day I mowed way bigger than this once a week for $5 or less most of the time.
I called about renting a mower, $125/day, holy crap folks, its just a mower, I can rent a car for $20/day
So now at age 67, I find that, indeed I am clueless about what crap cost to get anything done, and just how picky they want to be if you hire them. One guy told me, "Well if you want it weed eated too that would be an additional $25 each time and we don't haul off your lawn clippings or edge sidewalks or driveways.
Ok so I guess I will probably end up buying another mower, I said after I sold the last one I was never going to buy another one since at that time I was living in Colorado and our yard was rocks and cactus. I asked the teenaged boy across the stree, he is about 15, if he wanted to make $20, he said he would have to ask his mom, she told me, she didn't think a 15yr old was old enough to be mowing other people's yards. I told her, Oh ok, hard for me to understand since at age 13 I was working as an oilfield roustabout and at age 15 I was running everything on the farm as well as driving loads of wheat to the grain elevator in a 2 ton dump bed grain truck.
This is the part of getting older I hate the most, seeing what a bunch of whiney little wuss everyone and everything has to be too hard to get done now.
I just checked, the fine for not mowing your lawn is $50 and you have to pay the city to mow it. So if I let it go all summer I could probably pay the fine, get them to mow it, pay the bill for that and probably save money over trying to do it the right way. That is messed up
