My Fave John Wayne movies

Bruce Dern made a good movie called "Silent Running"! He was a good and believable actor actor when he played a bad guy, sometimes even with a sense of humour!

I'll admit that while I am a movie fan, the older films such as all of John Wayne's movies are a bit tedious to watch. They were great for their times, but the clunky acting and almost stage type dialogue seems very dated and slow compared to modern films. And when remakes of those films are made, they are often far more engaging than the original. A great example of that is the remake of "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges which I think is a far better film than the John Wayne version. And some of his films, with "The Green Berets" as an example, are really, really bad movies.

Largely because our brains have been trained to have short attention spans so we get bored by any cut that takes more than a few seconds.

John Wayne made a lot of great movies, with many great characters, but I like the westerns best. That said...

Rio Bravo is the clear winner, with it's great cast and the way they all fit and worked together, even Ricky Nelson's Colorado.

The other steps on the podium would be taken by Hondo and Red River, again both casts really brought the stories to life.

I love 'em all especially the John Ford/Monument valley trilogy because I'm a Ben Johnson fan also and who can forget Victor McLaglen. The Searchers and The Shootist are right up there at the top also.

Quiet Man is a St Patrick's Day tradition at my house.
Other
John Wayne movies I like:
Donovan's Reef
Stagecoach
Hellfighters
Heck.. most all of them
Sidenote: John Wayne was one of my Dad's favorites and he had a poster of him on the "look out" header going down the basement stairs. My youngest son thought it was a picture of Grandpa for the longest time. I hated to break the sad news to him.

My great Aunt Helen ran a boarding house in Bishop California. John Wayne stayed there in 'his' room anytime he was filming in the area. My grandmother visited her one time and Helen asked if she wanted to sleep in John Waynes bed? 'not if he's in there' my grandmother replied

yep, I remember really liking that movie... need to find it. I actually watched Dern in a pretty interesting movie just yesterday... "Family Plot" he plays a really screwy cab driver who's girl friend is a fake psychic and they are trying to find this old rich women's missing nephew.... last Hitchcock movie and a little slow in places but fun if you have nothing better to do.
