I almost forgot.......The Fighting Seabees........I recall watching it a lot as a kid....but when my Son joined the Navy under a Seabee contract the recruiters told him to watch the movie as much as possible for the history and memorize the song. I believe he can recite just about any line from the movie, and sing the song backwards...he's ready to head back to A school in Port Hueneme that's for sure. He watches it every time he's home, or at least has it on, and practices breaking down the M9, M18 and M4. He's a big John Wayne fan....

Oh yeah...

Sands of Iwo Jima.

Interesting story here. When we lived in Kobe, Japan from 1958-1960, my brother and I would disappear after getting our weekly allowance of 300 yen. Movies were very popular there at the time, most of them American made with Japanese subtitles along the left edge. We knew where all the theaters were and for 50 yen ($0.14) we could catch a triple feature.

My brother and I went into a theater where "Sands of Iwo Jima" was playing and sat right in the middle of the theater. Most of the theater goers were men and we didn't think much of it until John Wayne began hosing down Japanese soldiers during the fighting. My brother and I looked at each other and decided that this was not the best place to be with all of these Japanese men surrounding us. We sneaked out and went someplace else...

Donovan't Reef
McClintock!
The Quiet Man

Big Jake was a horrible movie. It ends with "Let's go home." Not "Check on my old friend who was shot."

The man never made a bad movie except for the one where he plays Genghis Khan. That was an interesting movie but silly.

The Shootist, along with Stagecoach, are my favorites. The alpha and the omega!

The John Ford Cavalry trilogy along with The Horse Soldiers are the next tier for me.

I love the Duke.

I would say "The Long Voyage Home" was pretty bad. Specially the cheesy Swedish accent.

McClintock! is a great one especially for the humor involved. The Cowboys has always been a favorite here because the character of Will Anderson was not the typical John Wayne, over top best with fists or gun or owned most of the territory. He played a man fancy financial bad times and admitted he was not always right such as when he comes down on one of the boys, admitting it would be one of many times to be wrong.
