I know that MR-3DB on a brass grip frames indicates a Ruger factory frame, but does anyone know what those letters actually stand for?

I'm with you on everything but the 3 = 3 screw. Weren't these frames produced at the same time as the "3 screw" frames, i.e. before the new model revolvers and if so there would be no reason to identify it as a 3 screw as all Ruger frames were 3 screw at the time.

he's close, I think the "3" is only a carry over from 'XR-3' ,just different letters, same number, the rest makes sense.....WHO KNOWS what was in or on WBRs' mind.........

I believe he used the "KISS" principle, from what we've seen alll these years.

The three means nothing more than the part number, with the lowest numbers generally representing the most major parts.
The Hawkeye grip frame was called "SS3" for example (Single Shot 3)
Yes, MR....Magnum Revolver. Makes sense to me. Had never thought about that before. Note that the rest of the parts for the Blackhawk also have a "MR" prefix.

Here's a related question: Why are all of the uninstalled MR3DB frames I have found, all polished? It is my understanding that the accessory white boxed frames were unpolished and had to be polished and fit to the revolver. I am assuming that some of these frames I have bought, were factory installed fraames and removed by some owner, then sold. I think this means that we need to look closely at the Dougan lists and compare the regular framed guns we own, to see if they were once brass grip framed.

Splitz,

Look close at the image I posted. A bit of polishing at the upper/rear but the sides of the "ears" and the trigger guard area are of a dull finish.

This baby is N.I.B. and hasn't been on a cylinder frame.

PS I also have this example. It's probably a "reject" that was rescued...somehow.....

Right. I believe all of the MR-3DB brass grip frames that came from Ruger as an accessory in that desireable white corrugated box were not completely finished. The owner had to match polish the frame to their gun anyway.

That's a good idea. Jeff Munnell once sent off for a letter for his Old Model Blackhawk 45 Cal. with the normal XR3-RED frame, and it came back as a Brass Frame. Someone had taken the Brass Frame off and replaced it with a blue frame. So it doesn't hurt to ask for a letter. You never know.
