MK III hunter trigger questions

Hey all. I am a bit new to pistol shooting and have recently purchased a MK III "hunter" with the fluted barrel. http://www.ruger.com/products/markIIIHunter/index.html

I use it in my pistol league for target shooting. I noticed that the trigger seems to be a two stage (I may not be though, but feels like it is).

When I put pressure on the trigger, I get some play, then it hits s resistance point, then I put a bit more pressure on it and it fires. Is this normal for a hunter model?? if so, what would you suggest I do to improve/replace the trigger? I would like a more smooth pull with no play.
Can this be switched out to a 1.5lb trigger system or something more suitable competitive target shooting?? if so, what replacement suggestions would you have?

I have a MKIII target and I can't really imagine changing out the trigger. Don't really think it can be improved.

but if you want to go for it, then let us know how it works. I think others here have done the same thing.

It's not a two stage trigger, it just has A LOT of pretravel. That is, trigger movement that does not affect sear engagement. You can certainly make a hell of an improvement. I just installed the VQ accurizing kit in my 22/45RP and it made a world of difference. The trigger itself is wide, flat and smooth. Which I like compared to the factory grooved trigger. It also has two set screws, one for pretravel and one for overtravel adjustment. Once done, my trigger went from a very creepy 4lbs down to a short, crisp, creep-free let-off of just under 2lbs. A HUGE improvement. You can also install a MKII hammer bushing that eliminates the magazine disconnect. This allows the gun to fire without a magazine inserted but the best news is that it causes the magazines to drop-free when the mag release is depressed.

Thanks for the responses all. I really appreciate all the feedback. I have spent the better half of today on the internet reading about the VQ accurizing kit and everything I see is extremely positive and sounds like if will fix my pretravel problem. I believe I will try one out. I am also readign that the install is not too difficult.

Why is that needed? I have never seen the need to fire it single shot and my Mark III already drops the magazine free when I push the release.

Some folks remove the magazine disconnect on general principal. I would. Don't know if it affects the standard MKIII but on the 22/45's, the magazines absolutely do not drop free. They can actually be a little bit of a pain to remove. Ditching the magazine disconnect fixes that malady. It is also a little bit of a nuisance to have to insert a magazine just to drop the hammer.

Don't get the VQ accurizing kit, it's a waste of money. Just get the VQ sear and trigger, your trigger pull will come down to about 2.5lb. and you can adjust the pre-travel. I have the VQ sear in 5 of my MKIII's and also the VQ extractor and never had a FTE or any other issues. I would add, get a hammer bushing if you have a 2245, but otherwise, +1 on the sear and trigger. I did the extractor too. No problems, the guntalk link helped A LOT!
