Mini 14 ranch 581

My 581 series ranch rifle doesn't have holes drilled and tapped going down into the ring bases like some I have seen . I am posting a picture I grabbed off of YouTube with the tapped holes in the bases. Was this something Ruger did on a whim or is it serial number specific. I have seen these drilled and tapped this way on pre 581 guns and post 581 guns. Or have these been done after the fact by the owners.

Not sure when Ruger started or stopped this, but the 30 I have has a factory Ruger scope rail that attaches to those factory-drilled holes.

I thought they were standard on the current offerings.

Just watched a video on YT where it was mentioned that those holes are standard on the 584 model so they aren't discontinued. I also took a look at the Ruger web site where they have pictures showing some with and some without those holes when you expand the section dealing with integral scope mounts or the section dealing with Picatinny rails. Ironically, the default picture for the Picatinny rails does not show the holes present.

Those holes are for a factory-produced accessory rail. When they started putting the holes in, they didn't stop. AIRC, it began with the late 581-Series...but regardless, the rail was not always included in the box. I bought a late 582-Series and even though it had the holes, I had to get Ruger Customer service to send me one...Either way though, holes or not, the original type "Ruger Rings" that use the scallop cuts in the receiver have remained standard equipment on the "Ranch Rifle" models...Hope this helps.
