I was visiting one of my customers today and he told me that he had an old pistol that he kept by his bed. He left the room and came back with a nice Single Six serial number 318xxx (I don't remember the last three.) It said .22 Magnum on the frame. I looked it up in Chad's book and it is one of fewer than 5,000 made, somewhere in the early 1960's. It was in decent shape and was at least a six inch barrel. I'll get a better look at it one day soon. I offered to buy him a nice new shiny one to trade and he is considering it. Amazing what you run across when you aren't expecting it.

Those XR-3 grip framed RSSM's are neat. There are many variations and the differences lie in the markings, type of grips and whether or not a .22 LR cylinder is with the gun. There are also some with or without firing pin grooves in the rear of the cylinders.

Did you inquire about the original box?

This particular example was shipped as a .22 Mag only, with walnut grips and has the Eagle Logo on the barrel.

Flatgate,

I was so taken with the gun that I didn't ask. I'll get a better look at it in a week or so and find out more details. I know this one did not have the eagle on the barrel. I had Chad's little handbook and I was trying to find the gun, without disclosing too many details to the owner.
He said he had another old Ruger somewhere and he would dig it out as well. I look forward to it.

If it has a Magnum marked frame, no eagle on barrel, and a magnum cylinder without firing pin groove, serial number range 300013 to 335781. About 21,500 made. If with the same markings but with extra 22 l.r. cylinder about 5000 made, serial number range 308310 to 339003.

If your gun has the Ruger Eagle stamped on the barrel at the end of the address, with only the 22 Mag. cylinder then only 3750 made. If with the same markings, (Eagle stamped on barrel), with the extra 22 l.r. cylinder then about 5250 made, serial number range 324388 to 339948.

I am including some pictures of .22 Mag. only with Eagle stamped on the barrel, serial number 331329. This is one of only 3750 made. It has the original box, paperwork, and the very rare "hang tag".

I snuck this image out of Utah. It's s/n's 300022 and 300023. Poor ol' 23 is a "Red Headed Stepchild" that has a firing pin groove on the rear of it's only cylinder, a Magnum chambered example.

Yup, those RSSM's are quite collectible.

Street, your Maggie is AWESOME!

:D
