It seems to me a good idea to have spare magazine springs on hand for when they lose tension. I see Midway has factory Ruger replacements for the 15 rounds 9MM mags for $2.49. Not cheap, but not as expensive as Wolff ones. Does anyone know a better price for them? Also, where can I find spare magazine springs for my Mec-gar 17 round 9MM mags? I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells them. They must take a different spring than the Ruger 15 round mags.

Kind of begs the question...

how often do mag. springs need to be changed?

As long as they are properly made, they should never (or VERY SELDOM) need changed. HOWEVER, having said that, I used to own a S&W 6906 auto. S&W springs must have been defective, after about 6 months of being loaded, they were so weak that the mags wouldn't feed the last couple of rounds out of the magazine. Replacement S&W springs did the same thing. Replaced with Wolffe springs and never another problem.

I keep a few on hand for my Glock 21, my AR, my AKs and my Yugo Mausers. Only reason I have them is because I got them real cheap. Other than that, never had a problem with mag springs.

The 6906 does seem to have weak factory mag springs. I took several of mine out and looked at new ones and the old ones were an inch shorter.
Not good. The old ones still work, and I will use them until they malfunction.

So I went and bought a couple new springs for very mag I have.
It's a cheap investment. $60 and I am set for a decade or more, lot
cheaper than buying new mags.

While I was ordering mag finger extensions, I ordered a couple sets of recoil springs for the LCP.
Next time I need something else, I might well order some spare mag springs as well.
My concern is some bad future time when parts could be hard to get.
Otherwise, it doesn't matter; even with the Christmas rush, I had parts from Ruger in two days.
