As has been mentioned by many members, our forum has more than a few well seasoned citizens on this forum.
We have a special kind of internet extended family here. People care about other members. We miss them when they disappear.

Lately it has been Pat in Co., but whatever happened to Rancher Will, or Tallbald, or many other members who just suddenly vanish, never to be heard from again? We may never know.

I started to think about how this problem could be addressed, and I think I may have a solution for those who wish to participate.
This would be outside the parameters of this forum specifically, so as not to burden the moderators with any more work.

Each of us have other members we are friends with, if only on this forum. You may not have formally "friended" them, even though it is an option, but I think we all have members we feel a kindship with that we would be comfortable sharing information with. If a member were to PM another member or two or three to ask if they were willing, contact information could be exchanged, such as phone numbers and maybe also the phone number and name of your emergency contact person. That way, if someone suddenly "disappeared" a call could be made to check on the welfare of the member. If someone noticed the sudden absence of a prolific poster, for example, they could post a "Where's Watchman?" thread in the lounge, triggering your friends to try to make contact. If multiple attempts fail, the emergency contact person could be called. Who knows, maybe you only fell down the stairs and can't get to the phone, and are slowly starving in the basement! A call to your emergency contact might initiate a search that could save your life!

At the very least, it could give us an idea of what happened, or is happening, with our Ruger Family. The one drawback I can see is upsetting a family member of someone that's passed away. I would urge anyone deciding to use this system to inform their emergency contact person about their participation in it.

Feel free to offer suggestions on modifications to this idea!

As you allude to, odds are they are dead, or in the home being humiliated, robbed and abused.
I sort of like your idea because so many of us have no family or friends, you'd be surprised how many live alone and have for most of their lives.

However I'm not so sure about getting that involved with calling an emergency contact number. Perhaps a simple memorandum here on the forum if a long standing member has not been on board for 3 months or longer. But not a separate thread for each, one thread and a list of names. People can respond perhaps with a story or two about a certain member they corresponded with etc.

A touchy subject for sure, my warped sense of humor says we can call the thread, The Dead List.
The cemeteries are full of the nameless ones, no one to mourn or even to remember you.

Well Hallelujah! Looks like we still have Tallbald with us! :)

I'm still worried about Pat-in-Co though, has anyone heard from him?

I also really like Huskerguy's thoughtfulness to ask his wife to notify the members of forums he frequents in the event of his death. It really doesn't matter how we find out, as long as we do. We won't have to worry and wonder, and it keeps our prayer lists shorter.;)

Remember the Forum had problems with the old software the final year or more it was “running”.
Some lost access, couldn’t get back on.
Several have found us again with the new software and re-registered.

I would not advise to the degree of initiating an emergency contact. People come and go from Forums all the time with no explanation. I myself stopped posting here for a few years...just occupied by other things. Recently returned, but never could get the Admin to resolve issue with me gaining access to my original account...thus why I have the "2" suffix added in my new account name, which mostly uses the title of my original account.
A search on "SwampBilly" shows my original postings...."SwampBilly_2" returns more recent postings since returning.

Anyone know what happened to Shorty Jenkins? He hasn’t posted since early 2022. I tried to start a conversation with him but it wasn’t permitted for some reason.
