Ruger Vice President and General Counsel Kevin Reid Sr. said the layoffs are happening company-wide, and he isn't sure how many of the roughly 1,300 workers at the business' Newport location would be affected.
Copied and pasted from the valley news

No doubt the change of administration has affected gun sales. Perhaps if their products weren't so rugged and durable....

They are making a lot of new and great guns now. Let's hope the layoffs won't effect their lineup. Let's hope they keep the folks that can manufacture quality. Down-sizing is sometimes a good thing.

The black rifle bubble burst. Too many chasing big profits on guns any chimp can assemble and disregarding the saturation point. Now they have to recreate a skilled work force that can make quality desirable rifles. I won't say again as that day passed long ago for Ruger.

wunbe

Natural ebb and flow of business ...... nothing more ...... nothing less.

I think they may have over extended themselves with all the new guns brought to market.
How many 9mm midsize tupperware autos do they need SR's American 9E, etc.
Ramp up production for all these new guns and the market goes flat.
Then what.

when the gun industry was in high hay, we were not important. jack in prices, slow down supply, increase demand, we were force fed high costs. not to mention, passing off poor quality as the new normal.

now they are on hard times?
imagine that.

we didn't forget. and I for one don't feel bad about it one bit.
this goes for more than just ruger.

fact is, when there is money to be made....the true nature of the gun industry comes out. profits win over customer satisfaction. and workers like it is said, are expendable.

hittman's right on the money.

I'd like to see the little things come down in cost, like sling swivels shouldn't $14.00, should be far less costly.

Now, that we pro-gun folk are no longer distressed that we'll be disarmed, gun product cost to the consumer should come back more in line with what they should cost while still providing profit for makers and sellers.

Well said everyone makes plastic guns for maximum profit. NO ONE wants to make quality steel firearms anymore.

The market is supporting "quality steel firearms" anymore. It's a market of black plastic and anything "tactical". The manufacturers simple provide what the market, the consumers, are buying. Blame them, the customers. Add in how those same customers expect Rolls Royce quality for Kia prices and the traditional, classically styled firearms are slowly becoming fewer and fewer.

They all want to look like tuff guys with their camo gear and black plastic guns. Doesn't matter that those guns have loose construction and poor accuracy. Their owners can't shoot very well anyway. LOL
