Looking for some help- value on 1959 Single Six 9 1/2”

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Ok… Done deal. I just got the 9.5". The more I thought about it he bluing damage on the other one was something that would really bother me…and I didn't look too closely when I saw the damage, so there might be more issues.

The shop is shipping it- a couple bucks extra but that expedites and assures the delivery. He was unsure when he would be out this way- early October maybe- so I just said ship it. I will post up some pics as soon as I have it.

I purchased this 1964 year Single Six in 2010 for the sum of $435 plus shipping. It came as pictured, numbered to the frame 22 magnum cylinder, very worn grip frame, blue wear on the top of the frame and Jay Scott grips. I've contemplated "fixing" it, but decided to leave it as purchased. I'm going to call it "patina". Can't remember the last time I shot it, so I'll bring it with us to the meet up at Contender's place next month.

If the price had been good,, the one you passed up could have been used as trade fodder.
Yeah, I thought of that. But it seems I grow too attached to things. My "concern" was that I would screw it up trying to fix the flaw, and then I'd have to send it out and get the frame case hardened, then add a RW gripframe, etc, etc. I know myself too well…as an old hot rodder, I just can't leave stuff alone once it presents the opportunity.

World's fastest shipping… I got a call that the gun was in! Unbelievable! I went to the shop and did the paperwork. Now I have to play the "Oregon Waiting Game". There's about 3000 ahead of me- so they estimated about a week before I could pick it up. Hmmm…how do you implement a waiting period without implementing a waiting period? Ugh.

Anyways… I took a good look at my new purchase under the bright lights of my local shop. I was a bit optimistic at 98%… it's more like 90-95. The grips look great, as does the grip frame. The barrel has a couple tiny scratches, and there's general usage wear on the corners. Minor lightening of the bluing at the end of the barrel. A bit of darkening on the hammer. But I'm happy with my purchase. Serial is 141569. I had that wrong too- that's what old eyes, dim lights, and excess excitement get you.

While at my local shop, I checked what they had. There was a nice .45 Vaquero- 4 5/8 barrel and the case hardened frame. But it had that billboard on the side of the barrel. Not a fan of that. $600 was their ask.

They also still had the 5 1/2" .41 Mag Blackhawk. Still $699.

I left both of them there…

That's a $850 gun in DFW. When I was looking for an original Vaquero in .45 Colt with a look alike CH frame and 4-4/8" or 5.5" barrel, they were all $600+ so I passed. They're way more now. I bought an Evil Roy instead (no transfer bar) and have since sold it.

I felt like it was a decent price. And it has the full size frame, so my ACP cylinder might fit too. If it's still there when I pick up the Single Six I might see if they would take $500 or so…

Back in 1957 I leased for 99 years a single six 9.5 inch bbl. It is still in excellent shape. western auto did not sell guns back then they leased them. I was 16 and had to get my mother to sign for me. I carried that pistol to school in my car most days and me and my future brother in law would climb over the gate to the dump ground and shoot rats. Great fun back then.

Well…turns out the Vaquero was a New Vaquero- also turns out the consignor was willing to accept $500. So I bought it. Also picked up the 9.5" Single Six at the same time. The background check on the Vaquero went through instantly. I'll post up pics later-

Ok, pictures. I must start out with somewhat of an apology. I'm sure you all remember that hot chick you met in a bar- and then on your first date she wasn't quite what you remember… The same applies here. Viewing in a pawn shop at closing time with half of the lights off, amped up by the excitement is seeing a pre 150xxx serial number…leads to inflated expectations. Did I overpay? Maybe. Am I happy with the purchase? Yes, yes I am. So I guess all is good in my eyes. But it's nowhere near 98%, and it was converterd and then unconverted by Bubba with a welder on the hammer. Oh the horror…I'll make it right in good time.

However…the Vaquero that I bought on a whim today is really nice and has seen minimal use. Not a collectors item- but for $500 I'm thinking I got a swinging deal.
