Another Texas story:

Around 1991 or so, my wife and I were quartered in the motel in Study Butte, Texas. The following Monday was sort of a holiday, and I needed to cash a travelers check. (They insisted they were "cheques.") I asked a resident:

"Will the banks be open Monday?"

"Banks?" was the response, "We ain't got no banks. What do you want one for?"

"I want to cash a travelers check."

"Oh," was his response, "We use the restaurant for that. They'll cash it for you."

And they did. Last time I was there though, they did have an ATM.

I lived in a small town in North Carolina in the early '90's. My next door neighbor was the mayor, ran the water department, also the dog catcher. He also built wooden shipping crates for a nearby factory and built pauper's coffins for the county when called upon. Powelsville was the name of the town, just a little south of Ahoskie.

Those were good times...

Terlingua is not too far west of Study Butte. That that town was sort of thriving during WW II when mercury was mined from the surrounding hills.

Another claim to fame was that the mayor was a goat. He was assassinated a few years ago. So far as I know no suspects have ever been arrested.
