Was burning powder yesterday, this time with John's all around carry load of 13 grs HS-6 under 250/260 gr bullet. (In this case Lyman 454190) I wasn't shooting up to par at the "bench" (actually from hood of jeep) but still managed 5 rds into a playing card at 25 yds and 5 rds on a "deer's ribcage sized" box at 88 long paces. This load has extremely uniform velocity, (SD 15 fps) averaging 1071 fps from my 7.5" BH, no leading and is real pleasant to shoot. I fired 75 rds in testing and wished I had loaded more to plink with! A very fine all around load for this weight bullet, one that will become my "standard" too...Thanks once again John! :)

Didn't realize it was recommended by John. Been shooting it several years after Weshoot2 recommended it here on the forum. Still have a few hundred loaded and ready to go.

Just need time to get again. Been out twice this spring shooting the old models using 255gr SWC Meisters and 8.5gr Universal. First time I'd tried the light loads.

Usually using H110 and heavy bullets.

Notice my velocity is right in line with John's data given his penchant for shorter barrels. Says Linebaugh: "My personal loads include only 3 loads that I have settled on for all my handgun shooting. All are safe in Rugers and have been recommended to hundreds of shooters, All report good results and accuracy".
Powder Gr. Bullet Velocity Use
WW 231 8 gr. 260 cast 900 fps defense/plinker/big game
HS 6 13 gr 260 cast 1050 fps big game
HS 6 13 gr 310/320 cast 1000 fps big game
H-110 24 260 cast 1280 fps big game
H-110 24 310/320 cast 1250 fps big game/ dangerous game

Oh BTW, tested a "cowboy load" also that I cooked up using the 255 Hornady swaged bullet and a Lee 1.0 cc scoop of PB powder. (Av 8.3 grs) These are very clean burning, non leading, fairly economical, and do "full tilt 1880's" velocity I suppose, 900 fps...Whoop di ki yi! eh?

This may sound like a dumb question.........but what type of powder is HS-6. Is it ball by any chance?

I have never used any HS-6 and am looking for ball type powders that drop consistently from my powder measure.......

OK, I just answered my own question on the Hodgdon Website.......it is a spherical poweder.

Are you really picking on a Colt-sized sixgun with a large frame Ruger???
