After more than a year of looking I finally found a job, woohoo! I was forced to sell my much loved old 686 to pay some rent and now I'm looking to replace it. I'm not real keen on new S&W's for many reason so a GP is in my future. Now my question is are new GP's as good and tough as say a early 90's model? Also IIRC there was a run of target grey GP's a few years ago, are those still available or do I have a search ahead of me, love to find a target grey 6" GP or should I focus on an older model?

I have a GP100 since new in 2007. I can't comment on how tough they were in the 1990's but mine is pretty tough. It is a blued 6in. model. I sort of wish I bought the 4 inch version. It's a heavy gun and the 6 inch is just a little bit front heavy.

I split the difference and got a 5" model...

And yeah, I like it just fine.

The later 1s have the Hogue grips (too stiky for me & shaped wrong for my old hands) & the extractor is`nt pinned but have`nt seen/heard of timing problems using the new ejector system , the ejector is kinda "wedged" into the cyl , but still prone to powder kernels/debris gettin underneath.

Been waiting for a MIM hammer to show up in the GPs like the SPs but has`nt happened as I know of ???

Also the triggers are more stable (decent from the box) yrs ago it was a hold ya breath thing especially on a ordered gun !! But even now as then ,ya can massage the GPs trigger to be very smooth & crisp!!

My input & opinion others may vary .

I`m not BIASED I like ALL Rugers !!!

I can say that I have put 1000's of rds through my GP, and it will handle just about everything. I am sure it is possible to destroy one, but you would have to make a conscious effort to do it. They are also very accurate. Very accurate. You wil most likely prefer it to the 686. Just my opinion of course

I got a new 4 inch last year. Had the roughest action that I had ever seen on a Ruger handgun. Tellico on this forum disassembled it and stoned the surfaces. I was a little concerned when I saw all the springs and pins out, but after he was finished, I could not believe how smooth it was. Now it is my favorite revolver.

No reason that I'm aware of to think that new GP100s are any less rugged than in the past. Solid, very strong guns. Don

I started with a 4" GP100. I am a LEO firearms instructor and had to maintain my currency with a wheel gun. Loved that gun. But then no one (jurisdictions) had wheel guns anymore so I decided to up grade to the 6" for hunting purposes. And this is what I ended up with:

This is one of the most accurate firearms I have!!!

I picked up a 5" last year and think its as smooth as any of my Smiths. I did replace the stock hogue with a replacement grip and insert from Altamar which is just like the older style for around 35 or 40 bucks.

It feels much better in my hand. I think you'll like the GP just fine.

I'll probably never know how tuff my year old GP is as it is chambered 38 Special only. But, the fit and finish appear to be better than what Ruger delivered in the 90's. I have no problem with the trigger pull, but it is not as light as most S&W's I have owned or handled. Make sure you get to handle one with the old style "panel grips" and then decide if you like them better than the Hogues. Easy change over if you decide to go retro, and I bet you will.

Ruger says they decided against a MIM hammer in the GP when they switched to other MIM parts because it'd look ugly.
For now, they're sticking to cast hammers in the GP.

GP-100s have a reputation for extreme accuracy among other revolvers so thats a plus. From the factory not all are smooth but they can be made very smooth. Mine is now so smooth I show it to my friends with Smith's just to make them jealous. They are overbuilt for strength, some say a bit heavy but I like that. I have both Security Six's and the GP and I prefer the GP mostly becasue I like the sighting system with the removable changeable front sight better.
