Back in th every early 1980's, I saw and held 29865, at a Gun Show in Yuma, AZ. I recall that Ruger says 29860. The seller wanted $600; that was a lot for that gun, some 27 years ago. I passed. Also, saw and held a factory error NIB Om Super, in box with SLICK SMOOTHBORE UNRIFLED BARREL. WHEN QUERIED, THE OWNERSTATED THAT HE HAD SLUGGED THE BARREL AND IT WAS INDEED UNDERSIZE, SO HE KNEW IT HAD NOT BEEN BORED OUT....... It was not for sale. Funny, but a guy desn't seem to be able to forget some of these items, though years ago...... 8)

I have 29842 which has an XR3-RED grip frame and non-fluted cylinder.

And 29141 which has and XR3-RED grip frame but normal fluted cylinder.

29842 shipped Dec 1962
29141 shipped Aug 1963

But I suspect they were built more in line with the SN sequence and that is why the higher number gun ended up with the Super Blackhawk cylinder.

My only .44 Flattop is 29727, pretty close to end of the line, and it came to me with a XR-3 grip frame, fluted cylinder and 6 1/2" barrel, pretty much normal configuration. It had been back to Ruger and refinished, and the grip frame was completely stripped and bare aluminum. I put a Super grip frame on it and then an Old Army, but liked the Super one better. Never got a letter on it, as I figured having been refinished, it didn't need one, but it was probably a Nov.-Dec. '62 gun.

HH,
You really need to get a ship date. My guess? June/July '62...... :)

Most of the late '62 guns have XR3-RED grip frames. But, Ruger being Ruger.....

This one included a super gripframe as well. I've requested a letter for ship date and original barrel length. I know its ugly but hey, its a flattop, right?

I'll use it in my hunter ed class as an example of a "single action"

Hey XLIV,
Nice looking gun, I'd put that in my gun safe any day, Ruger should have made one just like that. I'll get the letter Flatgate, I have to call Ruger Records anyway for the gun I just got from ACRYLICTNK, so shouldn't be a problem.

I have 29582 and 29584, both shipped in November 1962 and both came to me with XR3 gripframes.

29233, shipped in August, 1962, has an XR3-RED gripframe.

I also have 29540 with the same as 29082 but in a 7-1/2 barrel.

Eagle logo barrel or non-eagle logo barrel?
I've got Ruger 1441's #29478 BKH-47 noted as having a logo barrel!!! Another variation!!! How's come nobody thought of that until now?
Now we need to know if the 7-1/2" flattops out there with XR3-RED grip frame have a logo barrel or non logo barrel.
Here's what I have noted for XR3-RED BKH-47:

29478 BKH-47, with non fluted cylinder, logo barrel
29540 BKH-47, with non fluted cylinder, ??????????
29549 BKH-47, with non fluted cylinder, ??????????
29648 BKH-47, with non fluted cylinder, ??????????
29719 BKH-47, with non fluted cylinder, ??????????

Funny thing is, I don't have a BKH-47 reported as having an XR3-RED and fluted cylinder....all of them have Super Blackhawk cylinders.

Now, to get back on topic....

Years ago Odie's Master told me of a .44 Blackhawk that was shipped in 1976. It's listed in the RENE Reference as being s/n 13971.

I'm guessing it's THE LAST .44 Flattop.

:D
