Nearly all laminate stocks are finished with a spray on Polyurethane. It can be had in various gloss levels. I would go with a satin myself. Sand the areas down and feather it out then hit with as many coats as it takes to get a smooth finish.

Hello. I am not really brand new here, but I moved and have a different service so I kinda had to re-register. Anyway I have a question.
I have a KM77VT MKII Target Rifle with the brown laminate stock. I used it in a heavy rain storm, and now the wood is "rising " a little right at the edge of the buttstock plate.
Question is---- if I sand this down to smooth it out, how do I get the satin finish again, the finished product like it was when new ??

I would want to be absolutely positive that the swelling was not just temporary.

May I suggest visiting Brownell's web site and obtaining a product called Chem Pak's Gun-Savr satin oil spray finish. This product is a mix of natural tung oils & urethane and is very easy to apply with no sags or runs. I've used it on several laminated stocks and it made a novice like me look very professional.
