Another version.. Your Mileage May Vary

John Wayne was known for wearing a copper bracelet, specifically a brass bracelet gifted to him by the Montagnard people of Vietnam's Central Highlands during the filming of The Green Berets. He often wore this bracelet in many of his later films. Additionally, he also wore a copper bracelet for arthritis relief.
He also wore an M.I.A. bracelet sometimes.
Have heard montagnards, m.i.a., native american, but dident know which one the artist depicted on the airport bronze.

I spent a year 1966 in Danang Vietnam. About a month after I got there, a Chaplain if I remember right, came to give us a talk on the Montagnard people. His main theme of the talk was to "stay away from them". They were not such good people. He showed us a movie about their lives and what they did. One thing I found disgusting was that they sacrificed a water buffalo to make their crop come in well. It was the way they did it that disgusted me. They tied his head to a tree and then used a machete to chop the tendons in his back legs so they bent the wrong way at the knees. Then they stuck a spear through his side. What they did then was to grab the end of the spear and rotate it like they were rowing a boat. They believe that the more pain they put the animal through, the better their crops would be. Meanwhile the poor thing was trying to jump around on those slashed back legs.

Another disgusting thing they did was very disgusting. None of those people had any top front teeth in their mouth. When their children were around 8 or 9 years old, they had them lay on the ground with their heads between someones knees. Then the guy holding the kid would take a couple rocks, one pointed and one to use like a hammer. They would then proceed to knock out all the kids front teeth on their upper jaw. The Chaplain didn't offer an explanation of why they did that.

They said to stay away from those people and I was not very anxious to meet one of them.

I have been wearing this SS bracelet since December 1971. He got shot down 10-5-65, while flying an F-105 and allegedly landed on the Chinese side of the border. After the war the Chinese said his jet was obliterated when it crashed and yet they returned his ID in perfect condition. Another story goes he was in the jungles for a couple of years being resupplied by his C.O. until he had to return to the states. He could not be extracted.
