I'm a little confused. I thought Alaska was part of the North American Continent. And thus, part of the continental US.

I agree I thought it was part of the continental US. Just not one of the lower 48.

You always hear about the "lower 48"
Is Alaska the "upper 1"?

Heck, you could tefer to Alaska as a former part of eastern Russia.

If I recall the US and Russia are only a little over two miles apart.

In its strictest sense, "contiguous United States" refers to the lower 48 states in North America (including the District of Columbia), and "continental United States" refers to 49 states (including Alaska and the District of Columbia). However, the terms are often confused and used inconsistently.

Guess I'm part of the confused & inconsistent crowd!

I do, I took that photo flying back to nak-nak alaska after the spring brown bear hunt in 2012. that's Texas Tom Watkins infront of me. that's the West Coast to our left, and YES...you can see Russia from there!
