An interesting gun was just found by a RF lurker. Seems that a recent purchase of his was centered around firearms made in 1999 during Ruger's 50th year of history. This person bought a stainless Mini-30 from a dealer because it had the 1999 50th Anniversary sticker on the box (thinking the gun was also made in that year), but since Ruger used up their leftover 50th boxes over the next few years, this person got a 2001 produced stainless Mini-30.
Now for the interesting part. Seems the catalog number on the end of his box is KMini-30BAO-P. Upon receiving a phone call from this individual, at first the only thing I could think of for "BAO" was barreled action only. Ruger has actually listed barreled actions (the #1 action and barrel for example) as "BAO" in past price lists.
But the funny thing was, the catalog number for the stainless Mini-30 has a "P" which is the abbreviation for Zytel stock.
The next morning I went to look for the KMini-30BAO-P catalog number in the reference and remembered some info we'd learned only a year or so ago.
Seems that in the 1998-2001 time period, Ruger exported a couple different "very special" models to England, models which would conform to their stringent firearms laws. Two of these were the 21" barreled Super Redhawks in .357 Mag. and .44 Mag. The others were the "BAO" Mini-14's and Mini-30's.
In this case, "BAO" is the abbreviation for "Bolt Action Only"!! Which means that in order for those guns to go to England, Ruger left the gas port system out so that the individual has to pull the bolt back every time to fire the gun.
Here's the funny thing. I wonder how many of these "overrun" guns were sold here in the U.S. to unsuspecting buyers thinking they were getting an autoloader???
If anybody has a chance to pick up a BAO model, they are rare!! A contact from England once said there were maybe only 50 to 100 of the Mini-14's in two different models (Ranch and non-Ranch). He did not know a quantity for the stainless Mini-30, but I would also assume "very rare!!".

Interesting that would be OK in England, as here in Australia the gun Nazis consider even a semi auto converted like that - even if gas system permanently removed from gun still "has the potential to be converted back to semi automatic". A load of codswallop of course but they are VERY strict here. A shame because I used to love the Mini14 back when our government trusted us.

I have never been able to understand how you people could voluntarily become slaves without ever firing a shot.
I believe the term is "Her Majesty's loyal subjects," not "slaves," but the outcome is sometimes mighty similar. We have a written Constitution that explicitly secures some of our rights, and refers to our having many others; the British system that was spread throughout the Commonwealth leaves more of that stuff up to the government then in charge.

True. We theoretically have the right to do anything except if there's a law against it.

Gerat in theory but the result is we are one of the most legislated countries in the world !

Our written Constitution came within one vote of not upholding the 2nd Amendment as we interpret it. And that was before one-party rule of the other two branches of government. There's a good chance 2 or 3 of the SCOTUS judges will be replaced during the current administration. I hate to say it, but we in the US could be in the same boat sooner than we think. I think the main thing preventing it from happening is the midterm elections in 2 years. The Dems remember what happened to them in Congress in the midterm elections after the 1994 AWB. Watch out for a push on AWB and a lot more after those elections and in BHO's 2nd term.

I used to own a Univeral M-1 Carbine and in the instructions there was a way to disable the gas port for single shot manual action. I don't know why it had that option, but it did.
It can also be done with the 8mm FN-49 too. I tried it once in the FN and forgot how much more the recoil is when not in semi mode. After one shot I went back to semi again and never went back.

Are you sure you were ever trusted or might it be that the guvmint never trusted the people and it took this long to grow the balls to express it?

Lots of insults flying from the nudies. Maybe folks should save their political opinions for a different forum.

I got a pic of one of those 21" barreled Super Redhawks.
Looks like the Joker's gun in Batman. :D :D

Lets see here in the good old free USA i have to buckle a seat belt to go around the block. Put a helmet on to ride my bike around the same block. I cant have a cigerette about anywhere. We are taxed on everything we do in life and that was one of the main reasons we fought for independence. Sure we can have semi autos but try to get a full auto gun or in MI a gun with a silencer. We may have it better then most but or so called freedom in this country is pretty regulated too.

Come on Lloyd, you know the answer to the full auto issue here in the U.S. $$$$ if you are rich enough you can have as many as you want..... I've got a buddy down in florida, he's actually a member here but seldom shows up that has a storm room full of them.. all perfectly legal.. in fact he carries a full auto 9mm sub machine gun with him in his work vehicle.

here's a picture of one of his toys:

what was the OP about? Oh yeah... bolt action mini-30... sounds kind of cool... but I would not pay a premium for one... I'd rather have a standard bolt if I was going to shoot that commie ammo one shot at a time.
