My parents had State Farm and when I had my first car in ‘76, I too, went on State Farm. Still have it. Satisfied with them, other than their gun insurance policy.

"INDEPENDENT AGENT"
Mom's Cousin was an independent agent but being a close(ish) relative, my folks used his services. Every 2-3 years, he'd swap companies (and get the new customer sign up bonus for himself) so the folks really didn't have any long term customer relationship with any of the insurance companies. IMHO, this is a BIG mistake. YMMV
edit: This was concerning property insurance not health insurance.

State Farm here, too, for everything except my motorcycles.

About 5 years ago my car got hammered by hail. The SF adjuster asked me why I had a $500 deductible for comprehensive on each of my 3 vehicles. He told me to never have more than $100, or even $0, because my rates wouldn't be affected by comprehensive claims and it's only a few dollars more per vehicle. When a windshield got broken SF sent someone over and they replaced it at zero cost to me.

I have my homeowners and auto insurance with the Farm Bureau. My auto insurance actually went down this year probably because there are more cows in these parts than cars.

I've had State Farm vehicle insurance since 1970. Three or four years ago, we switched everything to State Farm after getting a really good offer to cover everything we own. We've had a few (very few) claims on vehicle damage from deer or storms but nothing on the property side. I'm still waiting to see how SF handles the $140K fire loss claim. The burned buildings were insured for a set value and that was paid within 2-3 weeks.

As one actuary explained it to me. the longer you go without filing a claim, the greater your chances are of filing one, so they raise the premium. If you do file a claim then you are a "high risk," so they raise the premium. No matter what, they raise the premium.

I'm sure you all know that when a state of emergency and FEMA is called in as in the case of the Hurricanes in the South the insurance companies are off scott free...not paying a dime our tax money pays it so if your agent says hurricanes are why your rates go up....it's not so.

I’d say if folks aren’t shopping their insurance needs every 3 years or so they may be missing chances to save money.

I know it’s not fun and it is time consuming. I never would change for “pocket change” like $100 a year ….. had to be worth my while cause it does require time and effort.

I’m with State Farm, have been for over 40 years. 3 houses, 2 cars, plus 1,000,000 umbrella policy. Haven’t had many claims over the years. Very pleased with the few claims over the years.
Jack, I said me too but I am mistaken....I was in a hurry that day and saw Farm....I am with Farmers, they are the ones that openly spend my money on diversity...

While no fan of Obama care, it hasn’t affected my out of pocket expenses. But my situation is likely different than many others.

As an example, cardiac surgery to replace a valve and do a triple bypass cost $15.00. The $30.00 monthly cost for my insurance would take several hundred years to meet what that surgery cost.

Sadly, most folks don’t have any sort of planning in place to cover health insurance when they retire. For what it is Medicare isn’t bad. But it doesn’t cover some things.

To any not yet retired, regardless of your age, start planning now for that expense.
