Okay, so this is how this went down………

A couple weeks back the wife and I drove from Minnesota to Jacksonville Florida to visit with one of our sons for a week. He had relocated there for work back in June and we wanted to see him. While there I made sure to hit a variety of gun shops – because I could. One of them – low and behold – had two 1000 count bricks of CCI large rifle standard primers. I haven't seen any of these in a store within a hundred miles of our house in over a year. I'm good on inventory but others back home weren't. I contacted them and one guy said he was willing to pay the $110 per thousand. I bought one, and at the time I figured I didn't need to spend the money for another.

On the way back to Minnesota, every additional one hundred miles further from those primers aggravated the living crap out of me. What was I thinking? Yeah they're spendy, but they were there. When we got home I was glad I wasn't going to think about them anymore. Right. For a week those stupid things were on my mind. But I figured there was no way they could still be on the shelf, or could they?

Today was the day. I called the store, they were still there, the guy on the phone agreed in a tired voice to put them by the register, I gave him my son's name and that he would be in today to pick them up, only then did I share the glad news with my son that he was on the hook to drive 30 miles out of his way in evening rush hour traffic to drop $110 of his money on dear old Dad.

So, I have 1000 primers 1500 miles away. At least they're safely out of my reach so I don't use them up too soon.

Did you buy them at Green Acre's or Curry Thomas?
St. Nicholas Guns & Range

For whatever reason the two you just mentioned didn't show up on my google search while I was down there. Thanks, they are now on my list for the next trip!

The owner name is Paul, he took that store over from another guy that got in trouble with the ATF. They just built the range not to long ago, not in one of our better parts of town.

You son out towards the Beach?

On your next trip if your driving remember to stop at rural Walmart's they sometimes carry reloading supplies.

Jacksonville is mostly dry and I only buy at the club I shoot at when they have supplies, but mostly order online.

I have not been on vacation in 25 years because I hate to travel.

This made me look at my reloading supplies. On top was a box of Winchester large rifle primers. Price sticker was $19.95/1000. That was the last box I bought due to rising prices. Sure glad there are several boxes underneath. I have enough but friends tell me how reloading components have gone ballistic. I can not for the life of me figure out why stuff went up that much. Perhaps demand but I suspect gouging, just don't know.

I bought my last primers in March, 2020 for $28 a brick.

Based on inflation and supply & demand, a brick today should cost about 50 bucks. A national sporting goods chain is selling them for $5.30/sleeve with a 300 limit. Obviously, the guy selling them for $110 is price gouging. He should be boycotted, just like the guys at gun shows selling old stock for more than that.

The reason the price is $110 is because people are willing to buy them. When the demand finally slows, they will go back to a normal price.

We are screwing ourselves.

When the 6:00 news uttered the word "pandemic", I knew what was in store. Anyone that had been thru the Sandy Hook years should have known as well. I did have to cash a whole month's SS check, but I bought a near lifetime supply.

I feel sorry for yous guys, but until you all wise up it won't get better. If the excuse is you can't shoot, use your rimfires or take your kids fishing instead. If you use that approach you will be helping the entire shooting brethren out.

Just paid 65.00 per thousand for small pistol primers; still wish they were 7.50 to 10.00 dollars a thousand like when I started reloading, but their not.

Gas was 30 to 36 cents a gallon when I started driving I don't think boycotting the gas company is going to get it back that price.

Your mileage may very :)

I look for older reloaders who die, and help the widows turn their powder, guns, reloading components into cash. I have treated them right, and in exchange I have a nice lifetime supply of ammo.

You mention a 'national sporting goods chain' are selling primers for $5.30/sleeve. I'm assuming you mean the sleeve is 100 primers. I just now checked with Graf's, Midsouth, Natchez and Midway - large rifle primers are all right around double that price and are rarely (if ever) in stock.

Which 'national sporting goods chain' are you referring to?

As I said in my OP, no large rifle primers have been in stock at a store within a hundred miles for over a year. I frequent about two dozen stores within that area.

Legal deer hunting will be tough for those who fall back on your suggestion to get by with rimfires and a fishing rod.

Sportsman' Warehouse. I read about it on another forum. At the time I was on a road trip and when I googled it the PA and NY stores had small and large pistol primers in stock. Since I was going to pass near by both stores I bought the limit in each. My wife was right behind me and she bought her limit as well....LOL.

I WAS talking about pistol primers, though. I just checked and CCI LRP are now $5.07 / 100. Don't know if your store has them in stock, or even if you have a local store.

My point is that if they can do it, then everyone else is price gouging.

I always need pistol primers because I target shoot a lot. OTOH, my hunting rifles are only shot during deer season so I have plenty of ammo on hand.

I have one of those stores about 30 miles away. Any primers they have on hand are a limit of 200. The nearest Sportsman's store with stock is in Pennsylvania. Quite a drive from Minnesota.
