So my wife's side of the family had a reunion at her sisters yesterday. Her Sis has 18 acres about a 10 minute drive from here. After everyone had eaten my sister-in-laws boyfriend told me he had some tannerite he wanted to shoot with the guys but the only firearm he had there was a small .380 carry piece. I offered the use of my AR-15. So I wound up coming home & getting my AR, loading up a couple of 30 round magazines & going back. We wound up out back with about 8 guys. A couple of the older men commented that they had never shot an AR-15 before. We took turns until we had blown up the tannerite & a couple of folks shot some more plinking. A couple of these men asked me how much I had spent on this rifle & seemed surprised to learn that one could get an entry level AR for around $500. They all seemed to enjoy shooting it & I was being asked questions afterward about how I put mine together from a kit. One fellow had me take a picture of him holding the rifle with his phone. I was somewhat surprised to see their eyes light up & them get excited at the prospect of shooting a platform that was new to them. I think next year I will take a few toys & more ammunition with me so I can let some folks have some fun.

Sounds like you all had a fantastic time!

Traveling down that way in a month or so to visit family and try out my nephew's 900 yd. range they have been working on. I'll be happy just to enjoy the 200 yard part!

One of the best ways to get folks off the fence,,, or make them re-think their position on firearms is to properly educate them, and allow them to experience them for themselves.
I'd say you did an excellent job. Now,,, why wait for another year? Do it again in a month! (Even if only part of them can make it.)

Hi,

I've done that a couple of times, and it brings up a question:

Have any of you guys carefully and properly introduced a "non-gun" person to shooting who did NOT like it? My universe is small, but I've yet to experience that. Most of them I've introduced hated to give the gun back when they were done. Add that a couple of them were amazed that having glass on a rifle doesn't make a hit automatic, especially on a target the size of a bad guy's knee at 50 yards, which, it seems, so many antis have been led to think the police should be shooting at. :)
