I like 'good knives'

But I carry CHEAP good knives.
My most used cutting tool is a cheap 'flipper' utility knife--it's always right there clipped to my right hand pocket. In my line of work, knives get lost, abused, and misused. I buy these knives which are easily deployed/folded with one hand on sale @ Menards for $3-4 each in a 3 pack.
On my previous trip to 'nards, I was trolling the sale add offerings and found another exceptional value. A 2 pack (one a 2.5" and the other about 3.25" blade) of folding 'assisted opening' knives. The 'final price after sale and rebate'--- $2.99. I bought one package just to see if they were worth even $3 and by golly YES. The blades are even sharp right out of the package. Not sharp enough for my taste but not the 'don't hurt yourself' blunted edge. Sent message to Son to pick up 2-3 more packages (Christmas handouts) if he's back in town.

I agree with you. I carry knives from Lowes or Home Depot just because it would tick me off if I lost or destroyed one of my good ones.

That doesn't mean I don't have nice ones. It just means I am more careful with them when I do carry them.

My bigger problem is figuring out WHICH one to care.

I usually go with Kershaw. Even their less expensive lines use decent steel unlike most of the cheap brands. I'm particularly fond of their assisted opening knives with the flipper. Even if I spring for one of their more expensive knives like the kryo it's under $100. This fills most of my knife needs. Small enough to be comfortable in the pocket and big enough to deal with things I might need a knife for. The handle fits my hand nicely. My thumb over the end and my pinky on the flipper means that it shouldn't slide back into my hand if used socially. The blade pointy enough to penetrate things if required to. All in all an adequate pencil sharpener, box opener, wire stripper etc.

Discovered Buck Creek about 5 years ago. One of the best pocket knives I ever had. Says German stainless hand made. No idea where its made ? Been a great knife for 50.00. I also have a Boker auto I have carried for about 20 years. Holds up well , AUS8 blade. Its backup is ready to go anytime its needed. Always have a pocket knife and something a bit larger on me. Dad gave me first pocket knife when I was 7. 63 now and have never been without one since. Can't get through a day without one. I have several Queen pocket knives stashed away too. But have never carried one ?

I discovered Rough Rider slip joints a couple years ago. I don't know how they can make that good for so little money! I have mostly barlows and canoes in that brand.

I will second the Rough Riders. They come sharper than the cheap old American brands and are soft enough to quickly sharpen with a stone. Great knives if you do bad things and abuse them hard at work. I carry one everyday although my good usa/Solingen/ Sheffield knives I carry too. But I don't abuse those.

Like Mobuck, I carry inexpensive, but good knives. I don't abuse my knives, but I have laid them down, loaned them out never to see them again. I always have another one boxed in the drawer, if I need a replacement. M-Tech is what I have bought the last three times.

I compromise and go with CRKT (I mostly have the Avant). Not too expensive (in case I lose them). In fact, I found the Avant when I lost my prior CRKT M-16 while on vacation.

Amazon product ASIN B07HYV58VK
For hunting & woods carry, I still carry my Randalls.
