It is one tof two MKIIs in stainless that I own and recently I had my gunsmith
who is normally superb at anything I ask of him, fit a Volquartsen Trigger and
matching sear to both of them. One appears to be AOK, everything works as
you'd expect despite it having a slightly less than 2# trigger. The other is puzzling,
outwardly it functions perfectly BUT for one thing it will not stay on safe when
the safety is applied. It will in several attitudes or positions, fall free off safe
about half way down to fire and allow a minor nudge on the trigger to fire off
a round. It will go into safe but often will not remain there though when on
fire it is fine. In the quiet in my shop away from house noises I can clearly
hear a minor rattle coming from inside the pistol so I assume that some small
part related to the safety functioning is out of place but when I study the
exploded parts view in the user's manual I can't seem to determine which
part it might be that is out of place. I will take it back to my gunsmith
week after next since I have other pressing issues this week and the next.
But anyone with knowledge of what it might be and who could enlighten
me on this will be hugely appreciated. To clear up in advance any thoughts
of this being the fault of my gunsmith is likely in error, he has done such
good work for me over decades that I won't bother to describe, suffice it
to say that I regard this as highly highly unlikely, if it is related to the
work he did I suspect this is a quite minor glitch and surely not his usual
quality of work.

Flattop,

Like you, I thought that I wanted the Volquartsen combo trigger and sear. I like there stainless trigger and both the kit. Once installed, I found a really excessively light trigger that would have occasional slam fire. Tracing my steps back, I took the factory sear and VERY slightly stoned the engagement surface on a hard whetstone. I kept the new V trigger plunger but returned the factory plunger spring. Now, with those subtle changes and retention of certain factory parts, I have a great trigger that is lighter than factory, crisp and much safer. There are more than a few videos that can coach you through the process too.

Thanks folks

I thought I remembered that there was a ball held in place as a detent for the
safety but was confused when I couldn't locate such a thing on the parts explosion
diagram. I've held the pistol with deliberate pressure on the safety button and
still hear the slight rattle when I give it a shake, could it be that instead of this
miniscule part launching during reassembly that it could be loose inside the frame
causing the noise? I have not risked firing it in case that might be the case and
some damage might result.

There is a spring and ball that puts a little tension on the safety, sounds like it is not there.

That is the conclusion that I arrived at as well, now if it is out of position
somehow and rattling around inside the grip frame, my gunsmith will be
able to locate it and reinstall it, if not the rattle I hear is from some other
reason entirely which is troubling. If the detent and spring are indeed
missing I need to figure out if I can order replacements for these two
parts(likely several sets as a hedge against future needs/losses). Any
idea how to get those ordered from Ruger, I have the part numbers
and the parts are not listed as factory installs only so in theory I ought
to be able to do so, thanks.

Just call Ruger- 336-949-5200. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks Delta, I lacked the phone number since I lost most of my contact
list when my phone's battery went south taking the SIM card with it.

Why not take it back to the gunsmith who worked on it to have the issue fixed. If he got one right but not the other and both worked correctly before, it seems like something he may have done incorrectly on one of them.

Sounds to me like the safety detent fell out and its on the 'smiths bench somewhere. A dab of grease in the detent spring will keep the detent in place much better during reassembly.

I'd refrain from contacting Ruger in the hope you'll get a free detent. They just might send you a detent for the Ruger Mark IV:

The Mark IV safety detent is black plastic, unless Ruger has changed that recently. Notice the flat on the working end of the Mark IV safety detent? My hunch is that black plastic detent and how easily it wears flat on the working end is one of the reasons why ruger did the "Safety Recall" on earlier pistols.

That is precisely what I intend to do, knowing the previous quality of his work
for me over several decades, I'm inclined to doubt that he did anything incorrectly
here, I just also doubt that he currently has the parts in stock so my thinking was
that if I could provide him these replacement parts it would greatly expedite the
process.

I intend to specifically and quite deliberately intend to tell Ruger that the parts
in question are for a MKII and not a MKIV, I also will tell them that if needed, I
am more than willing to pay for the parts, I am not looking for a free ride here.
Your analysis of the reason for the "Safety Recall" being related to excessive
wear on a plastic part makes a great deal of sense considering, in my case I
am fortunate in that I own no MKIV models, the MKII is as far as I go here.
I do have to wonder if Ruger's fix for this "Safety Recall" might be to resume
shipping metal detents over the plastic/polymer version.
