Hummingbirds are back

Hi,

Most years, I have one or two who stick around all winter, so I leave the feeders up. Not a problem in SoCal. This year, my "residents" seemed to go on vacation for a couple of weeks, but I got "buzzed" this morning! Those little guys are amazing.

A bit early for them in my area. They won't get here till the weather is in the 60s most of the time. They are so much fun to watch. Being retired I spend a lot of time sitting reading on my front porch. I have two feeders they come to, and one is right above my head. They will buzz in, hover, look right at me, then go their merry way. I do have to get some new feeders as mine were damaged in a storm last year.

Tom w his may help, my food mixture is 1/3 cup of sugar to each cup of water (boil water, add sugar bring back to a boil let cool) add enough cherry kool aid to get a red color. Tried the same formula with and without the cherry kool aid and the birds emptied the cherry one a lot faster. If you have more than one feeder keep then out of sight of each other if too close the guard bird will run other birds off of both feeders, if out of sight of each other you will end up with more birds.

Lori & I filled the feeders when she came back from Auburn and I peeked out of the window just before 7:30 p.m. and there was one on our feeder closest to the cedar tree...

Cleaned and sterilized my two last weekend. Never did get hem filled. I always use the pre-made clear liquid now. Have gone thru the homemade and the powered and this seems to be more stable, and attract less ants. I tasted it and it is just like very sweet sugar water. Got to get them up by Easter! The Easter Hummers might show up. Ours are very wary. I have them hanging on my back patio and watch them out the sliding window from my favorite chair. If they see movement from inside the house they clear out.

Lori bought some stuff that she puts around the shepherds hooks that repels ants for most of the summer.
Nectar fortress natural ant repellent. Got it at Home Depot next to the feeders and such.

Of course, after I saw that one hummer, I haven't seen another....yet.
