I was cleaning my son's Ruger M/77, tang safety model, and uncocked the bolt while it was out of the gun. Now, I cannot put the bolt back in the gun and the owner's manual does not cover how to re-cock the bolt.

Any help would be appreciated.

Basically you have to grab hold of the bolt shroud and twist and pull it back by hand. Use a hanky or rag to grab it. It ain't real easy but that's the only way to do it. I know because I did it once. Good luck.

Take the bolt and you will see the cocking piece inside the bolt shroud. Take a piece of hardwood and and press down the the bottom lugs of the cocking piece on the wood. Some of the newer m77's have a small hole in the cocking piece that you can put a small nail through to keep it cocked, once you have the spring compressed. I can't remember if the older tang safety models have this or not.

When the spring is compressed, turn the shroud and the cocking piece into a cocked position.
