I just bought a new Ruger Hawkeye M77 Stainless rifle in 243. It has a 16 1/2 inch barrel and had a scratched on it when I took it out of the case. It also seems to scratch easily. Is there gun blue for stainless guns. It is a matte Finnish. Any suggestions on how to care for this gun.

The matte finish on the stainless Hawkeye is simply bead blasted. You can try blending the scratch with a Scotch pad, but you really need to blast it with compressed air and media.

Blasting media comes in all grits. Aluminum oxide is used to remove rust, while baking soda is used for a soft finish. I suspect Ruger uses some sort of fiberglass beads. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/pre-finish-surface-prep/glass-beads-prod1209.aspx
