How many minutes in a quarter hour?

In the last several years,, (at least a dozen or more,) I've watched the local news and it's been a constant thing about how schools, teachers, all need, demand & such more money. The have a regular "spotlight" portion called; "Crisis in the Classroom." They often say things like; "Teachers are underpaid." "We need more money or we'll lose teachers." "Our kids will suffer if we don't get more money." "We can't live on a teachers salary."
Basically a constant demand for more money.

Yet,, if you actually look at the pay scale,, many of our local teachers get paid more than police or firefighters.

Just last night they did a lot of broadcasting about their "needs" because they were going to lose federal money soon. It was a TEMPORARY funding program due to covid,, and they KNEW it was temporary. There was a Rally in Asheville about it. It was all over the news,, and they were preaching doom & gloom for the schools & education.

If the school system would do a few things,, it would have plenty of money AND have better educated kids.

Stop treating schools like they are required to be supplying free education to illegals. Stop all the free food programs. stop wasting money on school subjects that are NOT necessary. Go back to teaching the real skills like reading, writing, math, english, history, economics. And start failing kids making them do a grade over if they do not achieve an honest passing grade. Stop making the tests where they can be easily passed or give credit for just trying. Remove all the non-essential classes. Put more money & emphasis on a real education instead of sports or fluff classes.
Schools waste a LOT of money on sports programs. Often,, I see so many who think school is just a place to learn to play a game.

If I have a job,, and the pay doesn't meet my needs,, I cut back on non-essential items until I can afford them. Schools need to do the same thing. But more importantly,, they need to truly get back to REAL teaching of an ACTUAL education. Isn't that what school is supposed to be???
The stupidity of people can be directly traced back to a poor education system that didn't demand performance.

Obviously the "man on the street" encounters which made it to the broadcasts of Jay Leno were the most ignorant ones, but sadly I think that significant ignorance about the most basic of things is more prevalent than many here realize. We've had threads before about how many young people do not understand the most basic arithmetic, such as when I was told by the clerk at McDonalds that my order was $12.40 and I handed her $22.40. She entered it into the register and then said "Your change is exactly $10, how did you figure that out?". The worst part of all of this is that these people vote and are easily swayed by sound bites which make no sense at all.

When I was still working I had an employee tell me that he was voting for a particular candidate for Mayor of the town where we were located because that person said he was going to make sure that Social Security was still working when current young workers retired. I told him that nothing that a Mayor could do would impact whether or not Social Security lasted. He seemed confused and said "But as the Mayor, can't he take care of this?". This was a high school graduate. True story and very discouraging because I don't think this young man was an outlier.

we all see that on shows like the old Jay Leno Jay Walking, where he asked similar questions to the most uninformed and vapid college students you can imagine. On the other hand I work with some young engineers in aerospace who amaze! It's not all bad, just what you see on what passes for news these days.

The rubber reference made me laugh because it reminded me of the time my grandmother was visiting un in California from out of state. It was a rainy day and my best friend Frank and I were leaving to go whatever 17 year old boys did at the mall or movies, or wherever we were headed that day. As we were getting ready to leave, Granny said "Don't you boys forget to wear your rubbers..." Frank nearly had a heart attack once we walked out till I explained to him that rubbers were overshoes worn in the Midwest during rain or snow to protect your shoes. California kids typically don't know about them...

On the other hand a school teacher (at least here in MD) has to have a Master degree in a certain number of years, Four years of college to obtain a Bachelor Degree then another year or so to meet the Master requirement doesn't come free.

Having a degree doesn't make you smart. In the 80s I was a Navy recruiter. I had a guy come in with a BA and BS and a Masters. He couldn't pass the enlistment exam. I asked what he was going to do, he told me he was going to go back to school and work on his PHD.

They are teaching, or NOT teaching, the next generation of idiots.

I used to think it was ridiculous people knew NOTHING about a map, directions, couldn't point in the general direction of Washington DC OR Washington STATE if they were standing in a parking lot at dawn.

I used to work with a fellow who believed there were 25. He would argue with you until he was pissed. If you told him to meet you at a quarter after he would be 10 minutes late. I swear. About 45 years ago. Was a high school grad too.

Once I had to "train" an affirmative action pick in an apprenticeship who didn't know what the "little marks" were between the numbers on a ruler.

It's funny. I was reading the "fluffy" news. Where they makes lists and one list of dated phrases is using the term quarter, to say what time it is. Apparently only older people say "quarter till" or "quarter of" for the time
