I need to measure the L.R. cylinder on a gun that's missing it's Mag cylinder. Am I correct that you measure the entire length including the "gears" on the front and the "nipple" on the back side?

To be sure a cylinder will fit, you need the overall measurement as you said but also you'll need one without including the "nipple" to know if the gap between the back end of the barrel to the front surface of the cylinder is adequate but not to large.
