In most of his movies, Randolph Scott always rode a handsome sorrel horse witha white blaze face and four white stockings. Is there any history around this horse?

Loved to watch Jimmy Stewart on his Private horse "Pie". Watched that beautiful horse in so many of his films."It was almost a human thing between us. I think we liked each other….I really talked to this horse. I know he understood… I loved him. I loved the horse." – James Stewart

My favorite has always been Glen Ford. Have watched a number of Film Clips that demonstrated his riding skills like the one below.

Trivia Question. Who was one of the Greatest Horsemen of the Civil War?
Hint- He was the number one rider in Jumping class at West Point. Known for his love of Big Powerful Horses with a lot of spirit, that others had difficult handling. He rode a Big Black Horse. .

Speaking of Randolph Scot, I remember this movie so well when I was a young kid. "Ride the High Country". Joel Mcrea was a Rancher in real life.
Also the young girls in this movie. Later as a man, I was at a bar and she was a few seats down. Looked beautiful

Randolph Scott also rode Palomino and Steel.
Dale Robertson as Jim Hardie (the Left Handed Gun) in Tales of Wells Fargo (was actually right handed) : Fargo in Tales of Wells Fargo, (Diamond)Jubilee = rode his own horse in TV series and could outrun and out turn his own horse, Hannibal from the Iron Horse. Owned 235 horses, of which five were World Champions.
Joel McCrea :Outlaw, Dollar
Great video with Glenn Ford, considered by some as fastest gun amongst the movie stars. Besides Tops, Ford rode a horse by the name of Jelly.
Previously posted a list of 6 1/2 pages of various horse riders and names of horses they rode on. If you would like a copy, PM me.
Remember, if weren't for the horses, the cowboys would never have gotten anywhere!

I always felt Glen Ford held his hands and the reins a bit too high in his films. In the above clip, his horse looked a bit unruly and Ford was flailing his arms around a lot. The horse and rider did not look like they were in-sync; not what I expect from a well trained cutting horse.
I've watched cutting horse exhibitions/contests and the best riders appear very still in the saddle and almost motionless; the commands to the horse are so subtle. That was definitely not the case in that clip.

As for the best riders in Hollywood, my vote good to Ben Johnson as number one. His horse back riding was among the most smooth and organic, like he was connected to and part of the horse, that I've ever seen. Harry Carey, Jr would be right up there as number two with Joel McCrea in a close third, along with Stewart.
Interesting side note on Johnson; he took off a year or so from films in the '50s and did the rodeo circuit. He eventually qualified for the National Finals Rodeo as part of a heed/heeler roping team and he and his partner won first place! Not only could he ride, he was a phenomenal roper as well!

Stewart didn't own Pie, but the owners let him use Pie for a bunch of his westerns. He wanted to buy Pie, but the owners wouldn't sell! Fonda did a painting of Pie for Stewart, also.

I think I remember that the characters of Matt Dillon and Ben Cartwright rode the same horse ( "Buck"? ) for a number of years.

Glen Ford was also very good with a gun.

Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford, more commonly known as Glenn Ford, was a highly celebrated Canadian-American actor. He was often billed as "the fastest gun in Hollywood," able to draw in 0.4 seconds according to The Virginia-Pilot, and the perfect star for films such as The Fastest Gun Alive. Ford was famous during Hollywood's Golden Age and one of the biggest box office draws between 1940 and 1960, a career that spanned nearly fifty years. Ford was known for playing an ordinary, everyday man in unusual circumstances. He is best known for his Western and comedy roles, receiving three Golden Globe Nominations for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Glen Ford was very fast, likewise Sammy Davis Jr, and a few others, but if a shoot-out was done with real six-shooters and live ammo, my vote would go to Audie Murphy!

Louis Lamour was very knowledgeable horses guns etc. He took great pride in the acuracy of his stories.

He wrote some Hop Along Cassidy stories and he would find a reason for Hop's normal horse to be lame or sick, so he could give Hop a horse more suited to his character.

One of the funniest Westerns I ever saw was "The Rounders" with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. Casey Tibbs had a bit part in the movie as well as doing a lot of the stunt riding. Ben Johnson did some fancy riding in Rio Grande where he rode standing on 2 horses bareback riding Roman style..... I loved the line from Victor McLaglen, Boyo boyo boy!!! Horsemen!!!

Ride the High Country is one of my all time favorite movies and I have one of Joel McCrea's best ever quotes tattooed on my left forearm.... "All I want is to Enter my House Justified"... It doesn't get any better than that

I was Deer Hunting in Sadonna while they were filming "The Rounders". I would have loved to have met Glen. And you speak of Ben Johnson. Love that guy. He was great as a bad guy in "One Eye Jacks Rio to Dad Longworth" You may be a one-eyed jack around here, but I've seen the other side of your face."

And Ben Johnson's quote.

  • Bob: Harvey Johnson's gonna be a famous name in these parts.
  • Harvey Johnson: How's that?
  • Bob: He's about to get hisself killed by a fella named Rio.
  • Harvey Johnson: That ain't him.
  • Bob: I wouldn't want to lose me a handful of brains trying to find out.

Ben Johnson did some roping in Simonton Texas, little place 5 miles down the road from me. From about 1962 till the 80s they put on a great Rodio on Saturday nights. Mostly locals but some big names at times. We first went to it in 1963 when we first came to Texas.

My neighbor also did team roping and was in an old timers Rodio with BJ. BJ was the real deal.
I think my neighbor was pretty good. As an example, he met his wife who was an AA stewardess while he was flying from Houston to Chicago in 1949-50. You had to be good to spend that kind of $$$$$$$$$$$. He was also going to Texas A&M Vet school. The Dean told him he needed to decide wither he wanted to be a Vet. or a Cowboy. He couldn't do both. He went on to be one of the best Vets in Texas.

Simonton, Texas "Round Up Rodeo". Ben Johnson Celebrity Roping. 1983.
