I seem to have an abundance of these so the other day I loaded up some for 45 colt. I wnated to push these a little so I loaded for my SRH 454 casull. Also wanted to use up some 2400 that I have had for some time. Not many loads that I found for this combination. Using Hornady's book they list 20 - 20.8 grains. I loaded up some at 20 and some more at 20.4. No chrony so I do not know how fast I figure out of my 7.5" barrel they were around 1200fps. Very accurate at 50 feet. Shoot a few out to 50yds but my offhand shooting leaves much to be desired. They were on paper but ... May try some more off a restjust to see. I have been loading these to shoot milder loads with unique but now? Anyone out there using 2400 is is there better powders for top loads? 110?

If those are the regular XTP bullets and not the "Mag" version, I would not lean on them too hard in the 454. The Mag XTPs are the only version made strong enough to withstand the tremendous chamber pressure produced by the 454 when fully loaded. They have a significantly thicker jacket.

If you're at 1200 fps that's fine, I'm talking fully loaded doing 1800+ fps...

Understood about the 250 XTP and 454. I was shooting 45 colt loads. When I load up for 454 I use the 240XTP mag or the 300XTP mag bullets and I think I approach 1800+fps with the loads there. Only need a cylinder or two for a whole days worth of shooting. I believe I have the 2400 left over from some load development with my 44 mag. and wanted to see what I could do in 45 colt.

Nothing wrong with 2400, those 250 xtp's and 454 Casull. As stated above, you're not looking for ultra velocity with these bullets anyway.

If you go to 300 grain mag xtp's then trying some H110 with mag primers would be in order. But again, 2400 is not a bad choice for 454. But with 2400 I don't use mag primers, either.

Got ya. When I load 454 with 300gr I have been using between 27 and 30gr of 110. If I remember right I was getting close to 1800fps at 30gr. I did load up some 454 cases with 34gr of 110 topped with those 250XTP bullets. Shot over the crony and saw 2033fps. Probably too fast for those bullets as they are not the "mag" bullets.
This load with 2400 is for 45 colt using 250gr bullets.

A year or so ago I wanted to do the same thing. I don't recall finding any 454 data for the 250 XTP. I e-mailed Hornady asking them about the 250 in the 454. Their response was to not exceed 1100 fps with the 250 XTP ... at those pressures I'd be fine. As previously stated , the 250 XTP was designed as a 45 Colt load with a thin jacket. There's been cases where the jacket was left in the barrel after peeling off the lead core. I was using 2400 in my loads , don't recall the exact grain count. If your interested , msg me and I'll look it up. Good luck

45 Colt loads for my NM Blackhawk with the Hornady 250 XTP and 2400 range from 19.5 to just over 20 grains of 2400 in starline brass. Somewhere right around 20 grains was a fairly accurate load in my gun - chrono'ed at about 1150fps
