Hoppes or Ballistol?

Like to hear some thoughts about either.

Depends. For copper or lead fouling Hoppes. Black Powder and long term protection Ballistol.

I use both, and have found they both can do an excellent job most of the time. That said,, I bought 2 big bottles of the original formula Hoppe's long ago & haven't had the need to buy any more. I've heard the "new" formula isn't quite the same.

I like them both. Hoppes as a cleaning solvent, ballistol as a lube. It's probably one of the best lubricants I've ever used. Great for rust removal.

I have Hoppe's, but I rarely use it. Just been using BreakFree CLP for almost all of my gun cleaning.

Hoppe's makes both a cleaner and a lubricant. I use Hoppe's #9 for bore and cylinder cleaning, and I've been using Ballistol for lubing and protecting. And I use a combination product on a toothbrush for brushing what I can reach in a semi auto, pistol or long gun.

I bought Hickok45's kool aid and been using Ballistol. I let it sit in the barrel and chamber(s) awhile before cleaning. Most of the other parts of a pistol will wipe reasonably clean with a paper towel and then I use Ballistol. I think Hoppe's cleans better and certainly faster. I like Ballistol for not harming non-metal parts and actually is good for the wood. But I admit when I smell Hoppe's I am 16 again

Since it was brought up about using Hoppe's as a cologne, I'll share a little.

Decades ago,, not long after Miss Penny & I had gotten together,, I was in my gun room, cleaning a gun. She came in & asked; "What's that smell?" Thinking,, "Uh-Oh,, she doesn't like this," I replied; "Hoppe's #9." She said; "It smells good, I like it. Why don't you clean your guns in the living room?"
I knew I had a keeper.
Nowadays,, if I will disassemble them, she will clean them. She likes the smell!

Nope, but SIMICHROME might have helped…

I think that's the motorcycle "smell" equivalent to Hoppe's!

Long, long ago I rebuilt an Alfa Remeo engine in the guest bedroom. I thought the garage was too dirty. Then I had to figure out how to get the darn thing out of the bedroom into the garage to install-interesting project!
