I was maybe twelve or so when I got my first .22 rifle, a Marlin 39A. And with I got a small bottle of Hoppe's No. 9. Now over seventy years later, I've still found nothing better.

And, also found that Hoppe's No. 9 is an excellent honing oil. I've got one of those triangular blocks with coars, medium nd fine stones mounted, plus the black surgical stone. I touch up my pocket knife frequently with these, and Hoppe's does the trick for me.

When I was a kid and being taught how to clean firearms we used Hoppies 9 . My father said it was made out of banana peals anyone know if that was true?

Some of my fondest memories smell like Hoppes 9. My father used it as a cologne. 😂

I do not remember where I read it (long, long ago ;)
A guy was dating a few women and said the one that told him Hoppes 9 smelled good would be his future wife.

Reminds me of a country song

"She never cried when old yeller died, she didn't like Hoppes 9, she never stood up for the Star Spangled Banner and she wasn't a John Wayne fan. I ain't gonna cry when she's gone!"

I once had a girlfriend that used Chanel #9 perfume. She didn't like boats and disliked guns. We dated only a short time.

Then I met a sweetie that would go shooting and fishing with me, and would even help me clean my guns. After a range visit she smelled like Hoppes #9.

Our 51st anniversary is coming up.

Years ago, I walked into a gun shop that reeked of Hoppe's #9. I asked the counter guy if someone had broken a bottle. He replied that they kept a metal pie pan on the wood stove (it was cold weather) an every morning put a teaspoon or two of #9 in the pan. That morning he'd slipped and put way too much considering the roaring fire in the stove.

Benzene---a cancer causing additive was removed from Hoppes #9 many years ago... I still have a bottle of the old #9 stashed somewhere from my youth...

Yeah, I'm still a fan also. Brings fond memories of my youth.

Just don't use it on nickel (maybe the newer concoction is OK, but I just keep it away from nickel).
And it will turn gummy over time, so don't use it as a long term lubricant.

But still a very good powder solvent.

Nickel? Nickel? Where would I ever find nickel, other than in my pocket change?

Like I said, I'm going to order some but I'm also going to look in my storage cabinet... I won't be surprised if there is some buried down deep in there... I'm always finding things I either never knew I had or more often these days totally forgot I ever did have.
So, what one really needs to do with the new stuff is add a little benzine to it? Would acetate work?

I found a saline syringe works good as a dispenser. Squirt a little onto the patch or swab. More control than dipping into the bottle and no chance of spilling the bottle. Then I put the used patches directly into a zip lock bag, because my wife is not a fan of the smell.
