HIGH SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2020 Scenario 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack. 1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. 2020 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school. 1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. 2020 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it Scenario 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students. 1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again. 2020 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability. Scenario 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt. 1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman. 2020 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist. Scenario 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.. 1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock 2020 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English. 1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college. 2020 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. Scenario 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed. 1957 - Ants die. 2020 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again. Scenario 8: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him. 1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing. 2020 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy. This should hit every email inbox to show how stupid we have become!

Have had the local police stop and say they heard that there were plenty in a specific area. Today they would lock you up as a threat to society or some such BS.

I graduated in the late 70's in rural Ohio. I always kept a shotgun or .22 in the vehicle for hunting after school in season. No one even noticed.

Sounds familiar. We were teens back in the 70’s and a friend and I were walking down the street with our shotguns heading to the local fields for quail. A cop driving by pulled over and rolled down his window and asked us if we had shells in the chambers. We said no and he asked us to show him, we did and empty. He said something along the lines of go get em and be safe and we were on our way. This was in NY by the way. If that happened today every officer would have been summoned to the site; including air units to stop the threat at all cost.

In As an 11-12 year old in mid 1950s St. Louis, I used a WW2 “bringback” BAR FN copy like this one to play Army with my friends in the neighborhood.
Nobody’s parents batted an eye.

In that period, some of the boys brought a 22 to school so they could hunt rabbits along the RxR tracks on the way home. My Grandparents were the school custodians so I didn't have far to walk to school.

Even in NYC it was so different. My brother was on the high school rifle team, and the team would take the subway to the range where they practiced. They would carry uncased rifles, and no one thought a thing about it. Today, if someone found a casing from a 22 it would result in a locked down school and the SWAT team.

In 1957 every household had a mom and dad. Mom stayed home and dad went to work. Never heard of a "single mom".

We had black kids in the neighborhood and we all played together. Never heard of the word "racism".

Drugs were what the doctor ordered when we got sick. Never saw or knew of anyone that did joints.

We had cops walking the beat. We respected them because mom and dad told us they were here to help us.

We also respected our politicians because in fact they DID help us.

We watched TV and the good guy always won.

Our dads fought in the war and we were ready to do our part if needed.

"We have met the enemy and they are us". What we have become is what we let happen. Not "all" of us, but way too many. Successive generations are getting worse. Not "all", but I truly think the percentage of morons is increasing.

NY and CA are often cited as awful places to live. People are leaving both states in search of lower taxes, gun friendliness, etc. I live in NY. Fifth generation NYer. It is a beautiful place to be. I vow to stay for the duration. Someone has to be here to man the voting booths or it may get even worse.

If you did have shells in the chamber, the officer would have probably counseled you to remove the shells, and cautioned you to be safe.

I was in high school in the mid-70s and in "advanced chem." Being the "good students" we were given keys to the lab to we could work on projects during free time. Often those "projects" involved making things that went boom out in the woods. Today, the police, ATF and the FBI would be called.

Buddy of mine was raised in a very rural area and boarded at the school M-F. He rode his horse Monday morning and rode home Friday afternoon. Always brought his Model 94 30-30 with him. One Monday, he shot a belligerent cougar, skinned it and put the hide in the kitchen freezer at school.

In high school ('65-'68), I directed a classroom presentation of Stalag 17 (I also played "Stosh"). We had a 1903 Springfield stock, a captured, nazi-marked Browning Hi-Power, and an SS-marked Mauser that the guys had brought from home, together with a couple of daggers and bayonets. Amazingly, no one was shot or stabbed!

I had a kid graduate in 2021 and one in 2022, still have two in school. The 2020 examples above are highly exaggerated. I guess that's either comedy or just to stir up conversation.

The 50's...what a great time it was....I joined the Navy in '58 at 17 after graduation...another great time looking back. Good preparation for the next 60+ years.

As late as the late 60’s most of the male teachers were vets quite a few combat vets. I knew several who kept handguns in their desks. And shared them with selected students. This was possibly the end times for such things. And school shootings simply didn’t occur.

Today there is talk after each shooting of arming teachers. Things have come full circle. But they usually do.

A friend of mine works at the local high school that we graduated from. He started there last year before the 2022-2023 school year. We are old enough to be retired but we both still work. He because of economic needs from being displaced several times through the years and me because I enjoy my chosen trade and am well paid to do it.

One of his first tasks after the beginning of the current year was to remove all of the sports trophies and awards from the showcase that they had been displayed in. He said he had to take them to a storage room where they were thrown in boxes. The former athletic showcase is now dedicated to "social justice" featuring blm and the lgbtq movement. There are to be no more sports trophies displayed and when parents are allowed in the school that showcase is covered so they can not see what is being done to their kids.

We are screwed....
