I love this analogy.Heirloom? Here grandson, take this Ivory gripped & engraved Colt. Enjoy it's looks & feel while you swirl your brandy in the snifter.
Glock. Grandson, times are gettin tough. Take this Glock & protect yourself & your family.
Harsh reality. Wish we all could enjoy the heirlooms for generations. But a dependable side arm seems to be more important these days.
To be honest- brutally honest- taking out your ivory gripped engraved Colt and fondling it daily will bring your grandson a lot more enjoyment and better memories than a heartless piece of plastic and steel. Chances are the protection of self and family will never materialize. At least you hope not.
I'm a car guy. Would you rather inherit a Porsche or a Prius? A Silverado or work van?
Personally, I'll go for a firearm with heart and soul hands down. If you feel the need to supply your grandson self protection, put the Colt in his hands and an envelope with $1000 and a note : " I loved this Colt, and it means a lot to me that you will think of me every time you hold it. And here's some cash so you can buy something practical should you feel the need."
By the way, back on the car thing. We have long been in the age when most any common vehicle from our times will not be considered a "Barn Find" some 40 years down the road. It will be another piece of crap the heirs have to dispose of.
